As I understand a third party utility was necessary to play HoI2 in windowed mode.

However HOI2wiki tells me that DD has a new command "windowed" which allows to play it in windowed mode...

But after setting the screen resolution to 16 bit colours and entering the command into the f12 console nothing happened

What am I doing wrong?

You do the following:

Create a shortcut to hoi2.exe
right click, properties
then, in the first area where you can type something, you press space and the type in all capital letters WINDOWED, so it looks like this:
"D:\HoI 2 Doomsday\HoI2.exe" WINDOWED , whereas D: is the drive you installed Doomsday in.
Then, you turn the color depth to 16 bit.
Start the game in wondowed mode!

Thanks for this info - I didn't know that. This ought to be very useful to anyone using a TFT screen with a native mode greater than 1064*768, which is all that the game uses, IIRC.

I control my graphics modes using a system tray tool called Intel Extreme Graphics 2 for Mobile. Using that, I had to set the colour mode to High Colour rather than True Colour. I suppose that's equivalent to the 16-bit colour that is needed for this.

I suggest that this thread be stickied.

Try changing from "classic windows" to XP-display

My proporties dont looks like yours, thats may be the reason.

All that needs to be changed is the Target.

You're simply adding WINDOWED to it. For instance, my target value is:

"C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Doomsday\HoI2.exe" WINDOWED

Exactly like that, with quotation marks and all. Remember, you're doing this to the shortcut of the game, not directly to the EXE.

Unable to initialize video. Until I reinstalled, it used to run at a resolution that fit my screen. Now I am stuck with a lower resolution.

you need to set your desktop color depth to 16-bit, and not to 32-bit.
Do so by right clicking on your desktop, selecting properties, select properties again or the button equivalent, and set the color depth to 16-bit.
