As Mughals neighbouring Chagatai nomads I noticed that Delhi managed to snatch a Chagatai province after long occupation. Can/Do occupied nomad provinces defect to the occupying power?

Is there any other way apart from having Qftnw idea (which Delhi doesn't have) and sending a colonist?

Anyone can send colonists if they have colonists. The easiest way to get colonists (unless you're christian) is indeed to select QFTNW for a steady supply of one colonist per year, but there are also other means. The one that Delhi is using is, without a doubt, the 0.33 colonists per year you get from simply bordering a Horde [I vaguely remember it being 0.33, but it might be something else]. So if Delphi borders Chagatai and have been doing so for some time, they'll have colonist to send into Chagatai land. They should also get additional colonists from bordering the Timurids. When the colonist has been sent, the settlement will grow, either by itself or by means of more colonists.

You also gain 0.10 colonists per year for each CoT you control.

I do have colonists, but don't know how to send them. When you click on an unoccupied province, the special screen opens that allows you to send colonists. When I click on the horde province, it's the normal province screen. Have I overlooked anything?

Serzis: The Timurids are gone. I started in 1525 - the first year the Mughals are on the map. In 1526, they would have already eliminated the Delhi Sultanate. My problem is that the Mughal missions seem to be based on a start in 1526 or later. I have not got a Conquer Delhi mission - which would be the most logical in order to simulate history... which was my plan.

Click on a neighbouring horde province and you'll get the province menu at the bottom of the screen. There you should find a small colonist icon next to a empty shield (rebel flag unless another state has sent colonists there). there should also be a zero number indicating that there is currently no settlment. By default the colonist icon is grey. That is because, unlike uninhabited provinces, you need to occupy the province by force before you can send colonists. And if the horde retakes the province the settlemwnt will be destroyed. Think russian conquest of siberia: you must have a military presence before you can send in civilians to establish a colonial administration.

the 0.33 colonists per year you get from simply bordering a Horde

You're thinking of the other idea, because QFTNW does not give colonists, it gives +50% colonial range plus the ability to recruit conquistadors and explorers.

Also, the 0.33 or whatever it was, was replaced:
  • In 5.1, I remember it was per province of yours (or theirs) that exists on the border, capped by 5, thus capped by 1.65.
  • In 5.2, I didn't check in-depth but it seemed as if the # of provinces involved does not matter anymore, and it became 0.25.

I concur with Serzis, and it's in fact what I mentioned in my previous post (in short notation though):
  • The icon is located in the place where the missionary icon usually resides.
  • You must occupy the province to become able to send colonists
  • You must protect it from being sieged by the owner, completely. Even a 1 day siege gives them a window to burn the colony (like how normal colonies are burned/seized) although it costs them infamy I remember.
