Playing EU2 and HoI I got the feeling that the science/tech research cost and time could be more flexible. Something along the lines of the first country to research a tech pays the full price+time. The 2nd country pays a discounted price+time, if starts the research after X years. The 3rd country price will be further discounted, if starts the research after Y years (Y>X). That’s because the results of the research become available in the books, magazines, universities, from ex employees who change jobs and countries, industrial espionage and etc. The more countries had the research the cheaper it should become. The longer the research is known the cheaper it should be.

What other factors should be taken into account?

Could this be called "neighbour bonus"? And wouldn't it be cool if you could see it as a tool-tip when you hold your mouse over research sliders?

But to be serious, this was something that should have been incorporated in HoI as well.

Yes, I believe that is called the Neighbor Bonus.

However, I wish there was a way, say as a primitive nation, that instead of having to necessarily develop gunpowder and all that, you could advance with primitive weapons.

For example, Level 20 Primitive Weapons could defeat a Level 5 Advanced Weapons or something like that. Maybe thats just a sucky idea, I dunno.

ya mean like differen tech trees for different countries? i'm not exactly sure what you mean...would level 20 primative be considered advanced? Give an example.

Yeah, like a different tech tree for different countries, like the whole Buddhist/Muslim/Orthodox/Latin thing in EUII, except different. Like, for example Vietnam vs. USA. Vietnam had less modern tech, but they won by dirty tactics, etc. I think it should be something like that.

Didn't the Ethiopians win a couple of wars against the Europeans even though they barely had any advanced weapons?

Do you get me at all?

Actually, AFAIK, Ethiopia had a fairly modern army at the end of the 19th century, due to their Emperors routinely shopping for European weapons.
Their army was not on par with European regulars, but compared to say, a Zulu Impi, an Ethopian infantryman was fairly well equipped.

Perhaps, something to do with the number of Universities?

We will have to wait and see how it plays out...

(North) Vietnam won by greater willpower. Their tactics and weaponry both resulted in a substantially higher casualty rate.

I don't see the point of having separate tech trees for weapon technology.

That'd be some viciously sharp spears.

I mean what would level 1 be? Dried grass?

Then lvl 5 would represent the advancement up to "a rock", lvl 7 "rock on a stick", lvl 10 "spear", lvl 15 "spear AND rock (held in other hand presumably)", lvl 20 "viciously sharp spear AND shield made of dried grass" ..hmm

I still dont think they should defeat the bolt action rifles though (or whatever advanced weapons lvl 5 would symbolize)

if your going to do that, shouldn't it be with fighting doctrine instead of weaponary? the zulu and matabele impi's were some of the best trained and motivated troops on earth. Not to mention their tactics which were way ahead of their time and technological period.

LMAO

But given that is the 1800s lets give the primitives the befifit of the doubt and say they start with rock attached to the stick. Thereby making it very dangerous. Lets say that L1.

At L5, the primitives have develped an advanced form of throwing that allows them make their spears even more dangerous.

L10 sees the primitives using various metals and making exponentially more dangerous spears and rocks.

L20 is very difficult to ge to. But it allows the primitives to use quantum physics and electromagnatism to develop lasers that vaporize their enemies and cook their food.

At which point the British claim the land is their own and go kill all the pseudoprimitives but fail to recognize the potential of this new superweapon/microwave and the world will need to wait many decades before they experience the horrifyiing brutality/wonderful cooking ability of these innocent people.

anyways... I do believe that once a tech is discoved by one country, it should be easier for another to get.
