Have we got any information about transport planes? In the tech tree there are no trace of researching new transport planes, but in the WWW number 2 the transport plane that can be built is called "Transport plane I". Does this mean that it will be possible to research newer models or will it only be possible to upgrade the existing model with the air experience points?

I've no idea.

I suppose transport planes will work as convoys. Off map and used to both transport and resupply.
Transport Planes work the same like regular planes. They sit on the airfield and you assign them to areas and give them missions like dropping supply for example.

Put transport planes on a mission to drop supplies. Useful for cut off troops (this is still WIP so can't show it yet).

Originally back in development they decided to use bombers as cargo planes, but scrapped that idea when they realized that it was way easier to implement dedicated transport planes rather than using bombers for that task.

Has this been confirmed? Might just be my memory, but beyond knowing transport planes are in the game, I thought we hadn't heard a lot of detail about how they worked (or about air supply or paradrops for that matter, beyond paradrops coming under battle plans in some form or other).

As for transport planes, like cargo ships I don't think there's a great need for them to be improved during the war. It'd be nice, and if there are discrete transport plane models, then having ones with different capacities and ranges/speeds isn't a bad thing, but I thought by and large most of the countries from both sides used similar planes for most of their transport (Ju-88, C-47/DC-3) throughout the war?

I'm guessing you mean Ju-52? Germany also used other planes, albeit in vastly inferior numbers. But the Me 323 per example is quite a different beast from Aunty Ju and had a considerable impact.

The US also used the C-54 and others... I for one would like to see a different photo with my transport plane brigades by the end of war than a plane that was outdated before the war.

I wouldnt say the Me 323 had an considerable impact historically. Sure, they could transport an large amount of troops and supplies but were giant targets for the allied airforces and suffered heavy losses. It is an completly different story if the germans had air superiority of course. An big problem they also had was, that they basicly couldnt abort the landing, since the high mounted engines caused the nose to pitch down if throttling up.

Aye, sorry, I've been putting some data on ships together (something to do while I wait for HoI4 :)), and am going through British Cruisers at the moment. Turns out at least three so far were sunk by Ju88s, so had the 88 in my head. I agree that the C-54 was a more capable transport than the C-47 (and that the Germans developed better transports as well), but apart from maybe getting a bit more bang for buck in terms of factory usage, beyond that what difference does it make in a gameplay sense? It's a bit like the merchant ships that will be coming off the slips in 1943 will be better than those in 1936, but not by so much as to change their role.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy with having either having a tiered tree of transports and hope that if it's not in the game, it'll be moddable, but given they're not fighting aircraft, and the role of a C-47 isn't so different from that of a C-54 (what was the different in carrying capacity between the two?), but in a game that abstracts out CVEs to a tech bonus, having one level of transport plane seems reasonable.

Transport planes do two things in HOI4:

  • Used for paradrop mission to deploy paratrooper divisions behind enemy lines.
  • Used to drop supplies which probably increase the supply value of a supply area.
You will probably not produce that many transport planes as their missions are pretty situational.

Well, they surely will come in handy on the eastern front and in Africa. Other than that i would say that an reasonable paratrooper force is essential for an successful operation sealion. You wont straight up mass produce them of course, but probaby an reasonable amount. Maybe something that you let run aside with low priority on 1 or 2 factories.

The C-47 had two engines and the C-54 had 4, effectively making them light and heavy transports. As a transport the C-47 could carry 27 men and the C-54 50. This means the C-54 is a better transport, however, the C-54 was more vulnerable to ground fire and in Operation Varsity in March 1945 suffered higher losses than the C-47's.

I think that for HOI4 we should be able to research air transports as a branch of the medium bomber part of the tree and heavy air transports from the heavy bomber part of the tree. With this sort of arrangement, the Ju-52 would be an early transport from the medium bomber section and the C-47 a later transport model while the Me 323 and C-54 would be derived from the heavy bomber section.
