How to improve chances for getting a succession war?

As per the thread title..

I always either lose the claim to throne or get PU just like that, with no other contenders. Is there a trick to this?

Pretty sure succession wars will only happen if either multiple countries have claimed a throne or if two countries have a royal marriage with the third country and both of them have high prestige but neither claimed the throne. Losing the claim usually happens when the country gets an heir. If you want to force your claim, you have to both have the same dynasty.
