I picked up HOI3 last week and have been getting thoroughly beat by it in every game so far, but then I know from other Paradox games that the only way to truly learn how to play them is to suffer painful defeats.

In my latest game I'm playing as Japan and have finally managed to annex China, it only took me four years! So it is now 1941 and I find myself aligned with the Soviets... (I modified how Influence worked so relations had a bigger impact on it).

It has got to the point now where, other than some odd alliances, the war has progressed as you'd expect in Europe, with Vichy France being formed and Germany, or rather the Axis controlling everything from the Spanish border in the west through to the Soviet border in the East. This is where my problem occurs, the Axis have declared war on the Soviet Union and as a member of the same faction I've been dragged into the war. The timing was fine, though I would've liked a little more time to take Indochina from Vichy, but that shouldn't be hard to do with a small force anyways.

Now I figure I need to help my comrades, Hungary (also in Comintern) has been annexed by Germany already, though the Soviet's managed to annex Finland (Axis) in return. But the Soviet line is being pushed back fast, most of the Ukraine is already occupied by Germany and we're only a couple of months into the war. I've sent a carrier group to the Black Sea in the hope that some CAS would help slow down the Axis forces, but it isn't making much difference. I also have Infantry on route, though it takes a long time to cross Siberia.

Is there a better way for me to reinforce the Soviet Union?

There is no Axis presence in the Pacific theater, so I don't think I need to worry too much about defending my lands from invasion at this time. I have a decent navy, as you'd expect, with a focus on carriers and cruisers and my army is mainly made up of infantry and marines. Should I load up some brigades onto transports and ship them to the Ukraine? I'm concerned that if I don't do something the Soviets are going to crumble and leave my in a very bad situation.

Thanks for the tips, I'm pumping a lot of resources into the Soviet Union at the moment, but they just weren't ready. I have quite a few transports so I'll look to doing that and I didn't know you could move the capital, that will make a huge difference.

It worked a treat, some event popped up that turned it around for the Soviets and between their new found forces and my army, we walked across Europe to the French border in a little under two years, making many Communist puppets along the way. By the time we'd hit our objectives for the faction, Germany was completely annexed by the Soviets and half of Italy was under their control, with my forces liberating the Balkans. I was just about to move my marines to Sicily and pincer the Italians.

As the UK managed to liberate France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark as Germany was annexed, I assume they were putting up a strong fight on the western front. I know they wiped out all the Axis nations and colonies on the other continents (was quite amusing seeing them conquer Canada). Little disappointed that the Allies and Comintern didn't come to blows before Germany fell, its inevitable that they will with the Axis falling, but since the objectives were met I'm not sure I want to continue the fight now the main threat is gone.

I think I might tone down the relationship influence modifier for my next game too, some of the alliances were a little weird in the end.

Like a communist Japan?

I don't find it weird that the country controlled by the player gets to pick which side they are on. But, Canada for example shouldn't have been willing to trade with a Germany that was at war with the Allies, let alone join their faction.

I prefer a-historical games anyways, I don't see the point of playing out what really happened, I can watch a tv documentary for that. Though it seems there are a lot of events in the game designed to make the AI go the historical route.
