Good afternoon,

I hope everyone had a great day today,

so here is my problem. I am king of England but the king of France has an anti-Pope. The king of France does not seem to be in any hurry to over throw the current Pope. Because of this issue the Moral Authority of the Church hangs around a 40-60 range. Is there any way i can ether (A) Get rid of the king of Frances anti-Pope or (B) get that Anti pope to overthrow the current pope..

any help is greatly appreciated.

See, here's the thing. I'm having a similar problem in my current game, although my issue is less moral authority and more 'DAMMIT MY LIEGE I WAS TRYING TO GET MEN ON THAT COLLEGE OF CARDINALS'.

Assassinate the antipope... his successor on the bishopric is an antipope too.

Assassinate the pope... yeah, I didn't really expect that to work.

Tagswitch and get the HRE to declare war for their antipope's claim on the papancy... they win... the new pope moves from the bishopric to Rome...

Oh, and his successor to the bishopric is an antipope.

Yeah, having an antipope should be much more dangerous. The "true" Pope should be throwing out CB:s for everyone who'd care to fight against an anti-pope ruler.

This is the biggest problem with Anitpopes IMO. You make your Antipope the new pope, and he hates you because you control an Antipope. Putting an Antipope on the Throne of Rome does nothing for you. The only way to get rid of YOUR Antipope is the revoke his title(s).

It seems to be new to 2.0, actually. I've made heavy use of Antipopes in the past, and it's never happened before.

If I had to guess, it's a symptom of the new Papal succession mechanics; the Pope, when he ascends, passes on any titles he had to a new character. And now... this includes the Antipope title, which seems to be linked to the bishopric and not a particular character.

Yeah, having an antipope should be much more dangerous. The "true" Pope should be throwing out CB:s for everyone who'd care to fight against an anti-pope ruler.

Eh, this isn't really my problem, although it would be kinda neat. What I think should happen when an Antipope is set up is that everyone who follows that Antipope should count as Excommunicated for all purposes from the perspective of those who do not. CB, opinion penalty, the whole nine yards.

How do we get rid of anti-popes in general? I assassinated one, but someone else just inherits. The only way I've found of getting rid of him is to switch to his liege, imprison and banish him...

The AI right now doesn't know how to handle making antipopes. I didn't realize how broken the system was until the new patch and the AI started making them. Is there a way to tell the AI not to make them for the moment, until Paradox comes up with some new options for dealing with them?

The office of antipope needs to die with the antipope himself. It shouldn't be inherited under any circumstances. It's neither good history nor good gameplay.

Reposting what I said from another thread, but its my take of the situation:

Its because the claim to the papal states can be inherited by his successor.

The game considers anyone with a claim to The Papacy an anti-pope.

The problem arises with the fact that like I said, the claim an anti-pope gets is inherited by their successor, so if the anti-pope dies, his "successor" gets the claim as well thus becoming an anti-pope.

To get rid of an anti-pope that's not within your control the only way to get rid of him on your own terms is with some fine console work in-game or removing his claim in the save file, other than that your choice is to wait for the AI to press the anti-popes claim and see what happens (which i have never seen them do.. yet..)

Suffice to say if your playing on ironman, that anti-pope is gonna be there for a loooooooooooooooooooong time.

If you set the claim from press=yes to no, then once the anti-pope dies so does his claim to the throne of St Peter.

Unless his claim was pressed. But then you wouldnt be having this problem lol.

I was really pissed off when I pressed my Anti-pope's claim and ended up with a new Anti-pope of my own. So I swore fealty to the Pope and transferred the Anti-pope over to him. Now the Pope controls an Anti-pope.

Update: My former Anti-pope has been named Court Chaplain of the Papacy. (And is still an Anti-pope)

they made a mistake in pushing the anti popes to AI without using propery mechanics for the anti pope.

why would AI randomly make permanent anti popes? Anti popes came about when a pope's election was disputed. since we have this new college of cardinals , they could have had it tied to the elections somehow but nope they didnt do that.

there needs to be a way for an anti pope to end, they are not from the liege wanting money forever, they are from disagreements on who is the actual pope and who was elected properly. an anti pope should not last hundreds of years, as it will be in this game since they made a stupid mistake. there needs to be a way to resolve the conflict, it is game breaking and unhistorical for it to simply just keep going

i'm sorry but once again they did a half assed job on some dlc mechanics and what is worse is it ruins the game.

Agree with pretty much everything said here. Antipapacys absolutely should end upon the individuals death. Having several successive Antipopes is basically a schism.

Agreed.

Antipopes are currently killing the game, at least for me.

No way to remove those damn antipopes. It should be much more dangerous to institute one.

We need five things imho:

A) Antipope institution dying with the Antipope, and if the ruler who instituted the Antipope dies he might decide not to recognize the Antipope
B) CBs given on the liege of the Antipope and on the Antipope himself to all catholic rulers to revoke the Antipope / possible faction to revoke the Antipope
C) Event which spawns for vassals of the liege who institutes the Antipope in which they get to choose whether they recognize the Antipope or not (if not, they stay loyal to the Pope)
D) Special Excommunicated trait given to the liege of the Antipope and the Antipope for malus in opinion to all those who don't recognize the Antipope
E) More strict requirements and circumstances for creation of an Antipope: right now the AI institutes one just because they can; they should have a valid reason to do so
