Works in Tay Nguyen, where I increased autonomy. Doesn't work in provinces where I can actually get revolts.

Help?

The method that can work is purely dependent on luck. First you have to wait until a certain area changes its revolt type to religious. To do this you need have that areas revolt risk stable for quite a while (0%). Once the rebels change to religious you increase the revolt risk.

The most consistent way I've found is to deliberately get a revolt in such a province and then keep trying to convert. The next rebel type is religious and if you leave the missionary there for 5 years until the -20% goes away it will stay religious (you can leave missionary maintenance at 0). Since you can accept demands via just having risk at all now you can convert that way.

That's what I've been trying to do, but I can't get the rebel type. In another game, I conquered Nepal, and converted on the same day as they were annexed.

If I bother the nationalists, will they spawn in manageable numbers? 4 Cham provinces, ~70% autonomy. My force limit is 5.

If you can engineer unrest in only 1 province, that's the only place you'll get a rebellion. I did this with Shinto with daimo nationalist vs Japanese patriots as Ainu when I conquered Japan. I isolated Date nationalists and killed them while a missionary was active there, leaving Shinto rebels at 0% for 5 years until the -20 unrest modifier expired, then accepted. Patriot rebels would have slaughtered me, but I held those down via other methods.

The most reliable way to get religious rebels over nationalists is if the province is in your culture group. Note, not accepted culture but Ryukian in your case.

Would have to first convert the province, culture convert it to Ryukyu, sell it to a heathen or vassal (and wait for them to convert it back to your intended religion), conquer it back, put a missionary on it to raise RR and accept rebel demands.

Ryukyu is Japanese culture. I suppose he could just go Shinto if he can come up with enough galleys to beat Japan, but I went Shinto off Japanese as Ainu (which is not same culture group at all) so it's definitely possible to get religious rebels in off-culture provinces.

My impression from the past was that it was the biggest revolt factor in the province that determined the type of rebels. In the past, i was able to change the rebel type to religious simply by sending a missionary to the province, but with high nationalism, perhaps it won't be enough.
