I want to change to merchant republic to have plutocracy as soon as possible.

The paths I certainly know are
1) take trade and finish it / use the decision to change to merchant republic / get plutocracy as 2nd.
Downside of this path is there will be too many merchants at the starting position where doesn't have enough trade powers share.

2) become administrative republic at adm tech 12 / take plutocracy as 3rd.
This way is quite stable but I think it is somewhat late.

Isn't there any other paths like utilizing rebel or event?

Not late at all.

Go Diplomatic and get "Revolution and Counter-Revolution". Use the casus belli and lose some wars until you become a Merchant Republic. DoW a monarchy, offer change govt, DoW a merch republic, offer change govt.

I think this got changed so that you cannot use it against yourself like this, because it was "exploity" as you just described.

No, you still can, if you have 100% WS against the target. They cannot refuse your offer tribute of change government if you have 100%.

He was referring to offering (in defeat) to change his government ... hence my comment of "cannot use it against *yourself*".

Edit: Nvm, I see now the concept of using a positive 100% warscore and then offering defeat terms.

I thought it is prevented since 1.2. Thank you very much for the information. 100% warscore to become noble republic -> monarchy -> merchant republic is not that hard to manage.

I've done it a few times, but I just don't think it's worth the considerable hassles and costs to become a republic temporarily, just to pick up Plutocracy. Yes, it's nice, but the extra wars and the trip back to monarchy are awfully expensive. If you plan to stay as a republic, it's certainly worthwhile, but republics are a bit underwhelming, unless you're Novgorod or irish or (what's the other one? Siena?)

Italian minors (i.e. everyone in Italy, except for Italy, Venice, Genoa, Tuscany, Milan, Savoy, Papal States and Naples I think). I think Siena is the only one that actually exists and is a republic at the start of the game.

Milan can switch to Ambrosian Republic via event and you get a weird republic with 3-year elections and small gov bonuses. 3-year cycles are sort of interesting anyway, and make going back monarchy very quick and have a good ruler.

Going back with noble republic is annoying because 2-3 election cycles (8 years each) means an old ruler. But you can easily have a 30something king with amazing stats to start off your return to monarchy in Milan.

No way. If I see a 0-0-0 heir coming and I can't kill him in time, I immediately plot to switch to republic.

Milan doesn't have Italian (minor) ideas they have a unique idea set which doesn't include a bonus to republican tradition ambrosian republic also awful because you can't switch to a different one and it has 3 year election cycles which means you really can't re-elect too much.

I suppose Amborisan is good getting a good ruler early but it's really just a stopover on the road back to monarchy...

I guess if you already have the Diplomatic tree, this becomes a reasonable course of action. But, as much as I like that tree, I usually don't pick it as my first.

Guess I should keep the additional government type flexibility in mind when picking decision trees (even if it is still somewhat convoluted to get to where you want to go).

Ambroisian Republic is just what you need to get those Plutocratic ideas and then let Republican tradition drop until you switch back to a monarchy. :)

So switching back to monarchy after getting plutocratic idea group won't change the idea group itself, right? lol, seems like a found a new trick to try after finishing my current Protestant Russia game, with HRE in mind.

Exactly, you keep the idea group if you selected it as an eligible Republic but later converted to a monarchy. It also work with events converting you to a republic, like the Commonwealth sequence for England/Great Britain. Accept the change in government in the DHE, take Plutocracy when an idea slot opens and then accept to come back under a monarchy. (quite historical actually) :)
