Yes this is a noob question but I know how to upgrade roads, however I've built all of my roads as double lane roads with residences at the sides. If I upgrade these roads to a six lane road for example, I'll lose all of my level 2 residences. Is there anyway to fix traffic without destroying loads of shops and houses?

As far as upgrading to a wider road, there is no way to do this without dismantling the growables that are along said road.
You just have to do it and then re-color the area again for new growables to emerge.

Also, if I feel that a particular 2-lane road might be a candidate for upgrading in the future, then I make sure that if a parallel road is built along side it, that the road has the equivalent of at least one cell as a buffer between the two roads.

PS: If you think that two, 2-lane roads that are parallel to one another, might both be upgraded in the future, then have a buffer in between the two roads that is at least 2 cells in size.

Like 28rommel said, leave space at the start so the road widening will still leave you with 4 cells deep for zoning. I do this all the time now. Works great.
You still knock the buildings down, but usually by that point they will grow back fairly quickly.

It's fairly long, but lots of good stuff in it.
