Real gamers don't even use a computer. They calculate all variables on paper!
I used to play shooters competitively/semi professionally eg I have been payer and my team did have a sponsor for a short time, now cs 1.6 and css have a far higher skill ceiling and learning curve of cod, cod got extremely shallow after the first modern warfare and the latest iterations are casual in the extreme.
Regarding DotaII popularity its a mix of Dota from Wc3 and the fact its effectively f2p that give it hugely inflated numbers personally im not that much of a fan of it, but then I haven't followed the meta of anything since Wc3 of any jobs except smite and lol.
The steam-stats haven't been as high as they could be due to players like me: until now I played all my paradox-games without steam, since I bought them on Gamersgate. EU4 will change that (since I think that most of these non-steam players will be too lazy to start them without steam: I know I will be).
Oh yeah, the old table game Europa Universalis. I'd buy such a set just don't know where to find.

I understand that this is niche game (Even if is market growth for serious in the last years), but i'm surprised that after that last announcements, Europa Universalis IV is not even in the first twenty games most selled.
I hope steam will give some pop-up for people in the last days before relase, publicizing especially the link with CK2.

After that the game graphics, mechanics and concepts will determine how many of us keep playing the game. Crusader Kings 2 is shown at # 33 with only 3,299 players here:

However, that is an older game with older graphics. I only played that game for 22 hours before uninstalling it. The only Steam game I still play is Civ V with 627 hours and it ranks behind the top two free games at # 3 with 33,000 players on average. I doubt if EU4 will ever get that high but it is possible.
Whoa man, I never said anything about Paradox games. Kinda put words in my mouth there! EU3 is a joke in difficulty after the learning curve. At least in SP; multiplayer is more complex than any moba could be, just because of diplomacy.
Only a small part of the people who bought CK2 bought it outside if Steam, so that is not true.
But in this small part there are many people that played an huge quantity of hours and a part of long-time paradox players and many active modders. However, I'm not saying that considering who not take it on steam, CK2 would reach the same level of other games, but I said that should be considered, becouse is quantity that exist, so what is not true?
Well, it's not necessarily 'false', but saying "many people bought it outside of Steam" certainly suggests something that is completely false.
We can argue all day about CK2 but the fact is we don't have the stats to back up either side of the argument. Now that EU4 is Steam only though it should be easier to have concrete evidence of it's popularity by tracking number of players and hours spent via Steam stats. This should make it easier to compare EU4 vs other games such as Civ 5 or RTW2 for example. Unless ofc people run it outside of Steam then we're back to square one...
Yes many, becouse are not the majority, are few of the majority, but are many of good number of very active users.
it is easy to meet this reality, simply lurking this forum, which is not a small community. (I have to admit that i have not statistics, but only empiric experience of the community, and not only this forum.)
For sure this for Paradox does not mean more money, but from the point of view of the vitality of the title, this is important, also because this vitality draws to resume play at various times. And even if quantitatively is a minority, is a minority made up of many players who certainly would give a boost to statistics regarding the hours of game play.
Among other things, I'm not saying this in a "anti-steam" way or other point of view, but in an objective sense that not should be ignored, because for the rest I'm a steamer of the first hour. :happy:
I'm like 99% positive Paradox devs have said on multiple occasions Steam sales account for at least 95% of CK2 sales.
By the way, lots of folks play Civ 5 offline and are not tracked on Steam. Steam allows this to happen. Lots of folks don't like to have Steam running all the time. I only turn Steam on to play Civ V. Otherwise, I leave it off. EU4 players will have this option as well.

Yes, however a true thing is that the statistics, must be read, becouse there a lots of elements and pollutants. some have to be approximated, steam is also full of "special" people. There are who (i know dozen of users like these) buy hundreds of games playing only one minute each one, there is who open a game going afk for six hours, and now with the cards there are player that simply are opening a lot of games for hours, in idle, to drop cards. And probably there are also other things to consider also about CK2 players on steam. (But clearly this not change that CK2 is in a niche respect to CiV5 or other games.)
The things that are more sure are: The great majority Bought the game on steam, exist an active part of the community that is out of this.
