All techs researched. My empire spans about half the galaxy and third is my subjects. At my fleet limit of 1600 or something with 400k total fleet str.
Awakened Empire easily throw a fleet of combined fleet str in 800k or so. In space battles I can barely dent them.
Fast carpet sieging exploit is the only way to cmbat AFEs now?

Divide your fleet and have one siege to draw their fleet while another takes out their troop transports. Then re-join the fleets, siege, and retreat a lot. You will take heavy casualties but you can re-build much faster than they can. What's more don't let the computer auto-design your ships -- if you've got all the techs then you can optimize designs to counter their weaknesses and gain a major edge. An optimized 400k fleet with a good admiral can win against a 600k FE.

How to defeat thier ships in battle? That depends on wich FE awakened, as they have different layouts.
http://www.stellariswiki.com/Fallen_empire#Ships
Generally a Corvette Swarm with Point Defense Destoryers. Leave the Destroyers home if there are no fighters to shoot. Both against Leviathans and FE, going for bigger ships is a common mistake. They are usually designed to counter those, wich accounts for a lot of thier "awesomeness".

Actually, that's going to be fixed in approximately 2 hours.

Well, fast blockade is, you could still send stacks capable of killing spaceports with minimal losses and armies capable of taking worlds with no bombardment to rapidly gain warscore. Point is that strats that emphasize not fighting their fleet still work.

Very good point. Of course those strategies also require more coordination, planning and dare I suggest, skill than simply using two fleets to lead their doomstack on a merry chase while destroying starports, and then starburst splitting the survivors into smaller groups that besiege planets.

Whatever you decide to do keep in mind that they may grow more as well. In one game I had an AE with three 1M fleets and 4 small 345k going around.
Basically the rule for AFE is:
"Kill it before it starts to grow!"

The 'murder by compass' AFE pest removal strategy:

1) Place a fortress with a snare, fire rate suppressor and mines. Cover it in PD - it might as well do something useful with the guns.

2) Create a death flower using kinetic artillery with shield regen boosters and minefields.

3) For best effect, try plasma/gauss cannon cruisers with a large plasma corvette screen. Shield capacitors are a must have.

4) Take your doomstack and split it into 4 component fleets. Place one on each of the four points of our hypothetical compass. If you have the spare influence/leader slots, try to grab an admiral for each with buffs to fire rate and hull strength. Gale speed is useful for the evasion boost as well.

5) Ensure the fleets are close enough to be within plasma range from the start, but not close enough to end up inside the enemy fleet.

6) Send a few raiding units into the AFE's territory to get their attention and lure them back to the trap.

7) When their fleet drops in, they'll be surrounded and all facing in one direction. The majority of (A)FE's firepower comes from their forward cannons. As at least 3/4 of your fleet will be out of arc, you'll minimise your damage. Given that your fleets are also starting in knife fight range, it's very difficult for XL guns to target.

8) As the fortress in the centre is such a puny target, it'll be targeted last after all the other fleets so it's free to provide that massive 25% fire rate / DPS debuff to the enemy throughout. Depending on the FE type, you'll also want to vary the amount of PD you take. Against Spiritualists, go PD heavy for ludicrous gib, for example.

If the above goes well, you've hopefully just annihilated an AFE doomstack with minimal losses. Replenish as needed and rince and repeat.

The bug was that weapons with Windup (XL and missiles) would cancel the windup if the target left the firing range/arc and they had to pick a new target.
Corvettes and cruisers used that, because they went in close and ciceeld the enemy.

That bug is fixed in 1.5, however. So the viability of cruisers might be a lot less now.
