Can somone explain how CAS missions from a CV work? Do you have to click anything? Do they do their thing automatically but it's not shown anywhere?

In my screenshots you can see my fleet naval bombarding. I activated every mission on my planes because I could not make them do anything.
In the army attack screen no planes show up as they usually do when using "normal" planes starting at an airport.

They are on the invasion support mission?

Take them off it. Use the 'anchor' on the right, next to the garbage can. This will let the carriers act like a sinkable airfield, and you can give the CAS, CAS missions inland. And send the fighters too, perhaps.

As an extra note, taking them off naval support will not prevent the heavy ships from bombarding

As long as the fleet is adjacent to the land tile, they will participate in the amphibious landing no matter what mission they're assigned to

It's only Carrier planes do require the fleet to be parked

Hopefully they address that in the upcoming update (given it includes both air and naval rework) and just forgot to mention it

Thank you, works like a charm. And I did not know ships are bombarding without giving them a naval invasion order. They are very smart.

Because of the abysmal range of the fighters their mission efficiency is at 6%. My air superiority decreases the defense by 0.1%.
I'm not sure if I miss something but this seems pretty useless to me in that scenario. :)

CV CAS seems not to be affected by their range. They caused almost 50% of org damage.

CAS (CV or land-based) are affected by range: they can't participate in any combat unless it's in their range circle. But presumably that's not a problem here, amphibious battles should be close enough to the adjacent sea tile.

And I did not know ships are bombarding without giving them a naval invasion order.
Invasion order makes taskforce support entire seazone with their guns, and use up all your fuel reserves while doing so - convenient if you have that fuel to burn, pretty counterproductive if not.
CV CAS seems not to be affected by their range. They caused almost 50% of org damage.
This was changed a while back: when you add coverage penalty to their usual range restriction, carrier CAS start being pretty useless.

Invasion Support is somewhat counter intuitively more useful as protections against subs. So if you have a good number of ASW destroyers, split them in multiple task forces in the same fleet and put them to invasion support for sea regions your marines will cross in an amphibious assault. This works better than the general convoy escort mission to protect your Invasion convoys from enemy subs.

Check carefully if the land is on sea air zone or land air zone.
To clarify, a lot of islands are part of the air zone that matches the sea zone that they're in. Larger land masses have their own air zone, distinct from the air zone over the adjacent sea. Land combats might be underneath a "sea" air zone in some cases; in others, you have to be more careful not to click on the ocean that the carrier is in, but the "land air zone" next door.

Carrier planes flying missions in this manner are no different from any other CAS on any ordinary airbase. Small air wing sizes multiplied by low mission efficiency from shorter range carrier aircraft will reduce their effectiveness. Better than nothing, though; might as well at least go for the land combat modifiers.
