I think you should build at least 3000 of yours army on each territory you have, then try to take some territory around you and bulid some big army and attack penninsula, that will help! Just look after the sea to prevent attack on your main territories!

I found destroying their fleet was the best way. Once you've done that, grab all the islands and try and get them in a peace deal. Voila, you're kings of the Med.
It's a very good idea but you must prevent attack on your provinces first because Hannibal will launch attack on your provinces from penninsula sooner or later!!!

Agreed! Destroy their fleet first. For that you have to build a decent war fleet: it doesn't even mater if you have less soldiers than Carthage in the begining. And then in two or three wars destroy their economy by taking away from them few provinces and money (tribute). When they are enough weakened you can attack directly the heartland.
When you reach that stage, it's very likely that Egypt, Seulicid, and even Numidia will declare war upon Carthage... don't let them take too much away from Carthage!

Job one: Destroy their navy!!! That places them on defense and off your territories.

#2: Ignore the islands and take them in later wars (except Syracuse). Your key is to take the large areas around Carthage and split Carthage's territories in half.

#3: Land forces on Carthage and the two areas next to it at the same time. Those are the Carthage's three bottomless wells for Mercs, manpower and money. Start moving east and west from Carthage. This splits their forces and prevents them from building a mega army.

#4: Take all the land you can from Nubia and at least one linking Nubia to the sea from Carthage in the first war. This will provide a base for your next wars.

Take Carthage's Heart out early. Their smaller islands and Spanish territories are trash. They will not be able to consolidate again.

when you guys strike for their mainland....how do you deal with those 35k stacks of doom that they have?

A question, if the AI has depleted their manpower reserve...what happens when they lose men?

You will don't gain anything besides peace when you conquer something besides mainland and then ruin their territory into two pieces, and slowly conquer spain! But you must watch your territories in Italy to prevent attacks from spain!!! I think carthage is stronger than rome in the first two wars!!!

My tactic to defeat Carthage was to do as already mentioned split the mainland in two.

Only attack them after egypt has lanched an assult (helped me no end).
If Nubia joins the war try to white peace them alone. That cuts half the battle out.

Ive found that when playin rome going against carthage can be a bit tricky. What i do is create 10 - 5,000 man armies to spread around in my control area.

Then from Rome i Build 5 - 10,000man armies, and another 10 - 20 or so 5,000 man armies. With the 10,000man armies i give them a general of good standing and LOYAL. The 5,000 man armies are merely Filler troops. they follow the generals where needed.

my plan for attack requires 3 navy's. Load the generals on the ships. then what ever filler troops you have room for. leave rome headed south. Stop off and drop men directly east of carthage, around 25,000.. have those ships Return back to rome for More to be delievered to same spot

2nd and 3rd navy.. move to the east 2 more squares and drop 25,000more men.. 2nd navy returns to rome for more men.. to dump in same spot

3rd navy moves to the east another square and dump men.. 3rd forces job is merely to cut off aid from the east.

You've just droped 3 large forces on 3 semi close squares.. you can see all of carthage movement between them. take those 3 squares. and continue to dump men on them. till you inital planned attack force is all seaboard.. Watch the surrounding area for troop movement.. Move your men In and out of less occupied areas picken off men as you can and take over as much as you can. since you'll take heavy casualities.. untill you control the provence you get no reinforcements. Generaly after taken 6 spots offer a peace. Request 3-4 places.

pay close attetion to rome as you will see some small forces land. Generaly nothing larger then 3,000 men as Carthage will be tryin to send everything it can to remove you from its land

At this point Carthage is cut in half. the first war is over. you now have several spots within carthage land to reinforce your troops.

Second war. .. even smaller forces needed.. from those 3-4 spots move out. 1 square each direction. use your navy to drop 25,000men directly south of Spain in which ever city appears least guarded.. Move fast with this.. pause game. declare war.. issue orders. as soon as your troops land and that square is taken you should have easily taken another 3 - 6 spots.. Request peace.. but only take the spot you just landed troops and the rest in monthly payments.... .... second war clears out troops carthage has located between your points of control forceing them to reinforce from outside areas. ..

3rd war... Slap carthage in the face.. there done.. you've split their forces so small. that a small army of 20,000 men can walk from spain to egypt with little problems..

the only really big problem ive run into is that by this point in the game. carthage and egypt are allies and i end up havin to reinforce my farthest east stronghold to keep the 80k army of egypt out.. but that leaves Egypt bare of troops and even easier to take out... hit the cities fast. and dont stop... their troops almost always get disbanded due to budget problems.

I just finished the my second Punic War with Carthage, Numidia, and Egypt and it lasted 20 long years. Carthage declared war on me and I suffered a few defeats initially but eventually rebounded. My navy was divided into four fleets with about 15 ships each. I found the main Carthaginian navy which had a huge stack of 28 ships. One of my fleets was caught by this monster and was eventually destroyed. I combined two of my other fleets to take on the main Carthaginian navy and eventually won the battle without taking severe casualties. Meanwhile, my other unengaged fleet transported one of my legions (~15k troops) to take the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands MUST MUST MUST be taken: its western location makes it an ideal naval base to reduce your supply lines for your navy and moreover, it allows you to blockade the Western African provinces and the Spanish provinces and the most important thing, it allows you to cut off Spain from Africa. In most of my games, Carthage usually has 2/3 of her troops stationed in Spain.

After destroying the Carthaginian navy and blockading all of her major ports, I begin to land troops in the least defended locations, which usually tends to be the modern day Libya area. The purpose is to build up a base of operation and to consolidate your armies to eventually meet and destroy the monstrously large Carthaginian armies. Eventually, Carthage will go broke and its manpower will deplete and it's armies in Spain won't be able to help out Carthage proper. You'll really want to ask your ally Massalia to help out since Numidia is usually allied with Carthage, which makes a favorable treaty difficult.

In my own game, I probably spent over 1000 gold and 200,000 manpower and 4/5 of my entire army to take on Carthage, Numidia, and Egypt. Massalia and I were able to conquer all of African Carthage, Numidia, and I had pushed Egypt all the way back to her Nile territories and pushed no further (they were still immensely rich and had a huge 60k army). I was only able to maintain my war with these superpowers by constantly looting the captured territories (using Rome Enhanced mod) but I couldn't push any further because all of my territories were in constantly rebellion and the Gallic tribes had just declared war on me and my Northern Fronter was immensely weak and Massalia had signed her own peace treaty with Carthage. But eventually, I was able to achieve a warscore of 80% and force Carthage to secede huge amounts of territory and pay large amounts of gold.

So in short:

1) Destroy the Carthaginian navy
2) Blockade the main Carthaginian ports, cut Spain off from Africa
3) Take Carthaginian islands to reduce your supply lines
4) Land your troops on Africa and engage the main Carthaginian armies when possible

A strong navy is the only thing that makes winning a war with Carthage possible.
