I don't seem to have anywhere near the army size to successfully defend myself from an attack from the Golden Horde. Any progress I make is repeatedly destroyed by a massive attack every five years or so.

Any ideas and/or tactics you guys could share would be appreciated.

I'd advise you, if you start in 1399, immediately offer tribute to the golden horde. Then follow your missions to get Novgorod and the other Russians under your control. After a while, the golden horde will collapse due to succession crises and their low land tech compared to other nations. Then is the time to strike!

Yep, pay the tribute. When you do strike, immediately blaze a trail of occupied Horde provinces in a line to the Black sea. You DO NOT want the dreaded Bohemia-Blob or the Imperial Habs-blob in your back yard. The Lithuania-snake is a pain, but hopefully you destroyed them when grabbing the cores you needed to form Russia.

As everyone else has said, offer tribute immediately. Then hope like hell that the horde collapses before it reaches Bohemia (or worse, Austria). I find that starting in 1399 irrepairably screws up eastern europe because of the initial overpoweredness of the horde. The fall of byzantium start is more fun, leads to a less bizzare-looking europe, and the huge luck element (how/when the hordes end up collapsing) is mostly removed. It's also quite a bit easier though.

Another option would be to ally with Novgorod and maybe another Russian minor and fight the GH. Scorch and retreat, wait for the enemy's numbers to wein, kill any reinforcements, besiege occupied provinces, strike their mega-stacks when their numbers are bellow yours or if they just failed to assault one of your provinces (low moral). Also, be merciless when/if they get a succession crisis. Worked last time I played as Muscowy

I started a topic with the name: Muscowy 1399. I recommend you to check it.

Btw, the horde did not collapsed for me, when I was Russia already, so I had to kill it all myself :) There was no succesion crisis, they held together. But once you're Russia, and have at least one or two techs in advantage, they're really not hard at all to beat. I did the same with Sibir, Kazakh and the Timurids: they will never fall apart really...

Pay up, unite Russians north of you and then turn on the GH in a massive colonization effort. While you colonize them, make sure you're extending your border so you get more +colonists.
