Hi guys.

Quick question. How do you deal with pirates after getting nav tech 8? I usually leave a cheap boat in each coastal bracket I control, but its murder on my navel forcelimits.
Is there a better way?

Not that I know of. You don't have to have a boat in every sea province. 1 port can cover a little bit more area. Try it out until you notice how far your ships can cover without pirates turns up.

So when I see the entire enemy fleet move against me they are really neglecting their own provinces? Getting pirates everywhere or is that a human thing?

It depends on where they are leaving from. In Europe it's almost impossible to get pirates, since there is always some country that have ships in one of the many ports.
It's way way worse in north and south america etc. Never colonize without putting a ship in the port.

The AI is really good at micro-managing, so pirates are no problem for the AI. The human player on the other hand...
If you hover your mouse over a coastal SEA ZONE, you will see which fleets are "patrolling". For the bigger sea zones like on the Norwegian west coast, you will need one ship per zone, whereas in the Mediterranean sea, one port can cover 4 or 5 sea zones.

There are slider moves and national ideas that give a nice boosts to naval support limits.
This system makes you need to consider where it is you are colonizing/conquering. If you have abysmal naval limits, then a wide spanning colonial empire will be tedious and inefficient. Britain and Spain will not have a problem here, but Scandinavians and Russians and balkaners (among others) will.

I hate you FBI...

How to do it in EUIII?

Make many ships, and use them to patroll the your shores. This should stop pirates i think...

and me who thought this would be about SOPA and PIPA :)

sorry for the slight derail.

SOPA and PIPA is a piece of dung. It is banditism, closing sites and blocking links, without proper court process... This is nothing like fighting piracy, it is just helping some groups of interest, to make them earn more money, by destroying the competition, and justifying it as "Figthing with piracy"

so it's better to have 1 ship every 2 costal zones than a few fleets patrolling a long coast? Right now i Have a huge colonial empire spanning all the continents and I am using fleets of 10-20 ships to patrol continents, but pirates spawn in the short time between patrolling, it's 1650 and it's getting worse as they spawn faster and faster. Should i use the single ship stationed every 2 coastal zone method?

Revolt Risk Mapmode shows you which seazones are being patrolled, so you can use that to determine where you need ships Some areas only require one ship every eight or so provinces (brazil and the carribean, notably), while others require ships in even adjacent provinces (mali area).

but i don't get any pirates in the Mali area (maybe because there are other colonial powers there), while in Brazil i gets lots and i am using a large fleet to patrol from Brazil to Argentina, and the pirates spawn very fast. I wonder why is that... When will pirates disappear? they are so annoying

Yes, you can park one ship of any type and it will suppress pirates in one or more nearby sea zones. Light ships or galleys are best for this. You will still want one or two decent sized fleets to deal with any privateers that are spawned by spies but a properly placed coast guard can keep pirates completely locked out whereas your bigger fleet sailing up and down the coast will kill them after they spawn but generally won't stop the spawning.

Disagreed.
One big ship can alone patrol all that coastline. The same goes for the new world. Just make sure to have a ship patrolling your territory regularly.

Having actual patrols is dumb. Unnecessary micromanagement because once you are in a war with sayyy... England, you will have to reset patrols in all that newly pirate infested water because England decided you didnt need those boats anymore.

Not to mention killing all the pirates that spawned during the war and the loss of income from having all your colonies blockaded by pirates. The loss of income is a factor even when at peace if your patrol is covering several sea zones. Your 1 big ship patrol is also at risk of getting killed if for example it hits pirates in consecutive zones or a stack of privateers while your static guard is completely safe unless you lose control of their home port. Also, ships count as military units to trigger the assimilation of natives events in colonies without the risk of triggering native uprisings when entering the province so they can perform a dual role where active patrols don't. Sure you can save on ship costs but any nation with significant overseas territory needs to build the ships anyway for tarriff maximization.

well but that is also true when you have single ships in the coastal zones, they will have to be regrouped for every war, while patrols of say 10-20 ships cal also perform well as fleet. Also patrols that fight pirates keep the navy tradition to around 70-80%

Not patrolling. One ship parked in the port is enough, in most cases, to prevent spawning in that sea zone and the adjacent ones. Those do not get regrouped for war; consider them permanent. (They also cannot be attacked unless their home province is captured, at which point they are forced out of port). Then you have a roving fleet to clean up the pirates that spawn in the deep sea or from spies, and THOSE are your war fleet.

As for being "murder on forcelimits"... it's really not. It only takes about 5-6 ships, for example, to cover all of the eastern coast of North America from Labrador down the the Florida Channel AND the Bahamas. Add the Caribbean and the Gulf and you're still at less than a dozen.
