I just started a new game, and entered the HRE asap, to see how that works out. It'll let me expand in Lombardia a bit more smoothly in the early game and give me the sexy imperial integrity. Hansa is more $$, but I'm fond of the med. My ultimate goal is to move my trade capital to Seville and inherit dominion over the Iberian CNs. I want to make everything below Chesapeake enter Seville.

There should be an achievement where every trade node below you has less than 5 left at home. I... drink... your... milkshake!

I'm currently speed running thassalocracy as Genoa. Genoa is a bit better than venice because it can go bloody everywhere! So far I am down to the 1600s because bloody venice-france alliance ruins my day.

Fixed that for you. You can monopolize the med as a Thalassocractic Italy with those cheap and powerful galleys. Once the Venice trade node is empty of all competition collecting there is no issue at all, since the trade power reduction doesn't matter at all. Keep your light ships in the genoa node, or move westwards at will.

Pick Genoa. Attack Hansa/Novgorod for trade dispute cb. Enjoy fighting across the whole Europe distributing the AE (Germany/Novgorod/Italy/Netherlands/Crimea/Africa/Balkans),

Oh, and form Netherlands of course.
