I wonder if there is any good way of building factories efficiently. To my knowledge there is no command to upgrade the factory continuously. There's a message that notifies that building is completed (and unfortunately it includes both factories and railroads). However it doesn't provide a good way to start the next upgrade - "goto" focuses on the province where the factory has been constructed. I can click "+" which allows to construct a new factory, but it doesn't give an option of upgrading existing one and if I "Cancel" that screen the interface goes to production screen, but it doesn't focus on the current province so this offers no advantage over simply opening production interface. Either way you have to find right state manually.

Please tell me I am missing something :)

You can SHIFT + LEFT CLICK on any upgrade icon in the industry tab to upgrade ALL factories near worker limit.
Do this once or twice a year and you should not have any problems. :)

Alternatively, CTRL + LEFT CLICK upgrades all factories of the type you just clicked on.

Become a liberal and let your capitalists do it for you.

How many capitalists do you need for them to start building factories successfully, a few hundred, a few thousand? Also, if your government type is interventionist, do you need to do something in addition to what you have to do under LF for them to actually build?

Also, do they have to be in the same province in a large enough size for each different culture (e.g. Swedish/Norwegian/Danish)or is it ok if you have a few small-numbered groups that are spread out across different provinces?

You don't really need a lot of capitalists to build stuff...more cappies means factory profits get spread out over a larger POP, thus a larger share going to POP needs. If you don't have established factories you will need to kickstart the construction yourself by investing (or be reallyreallyreally patient), as otherwise the only source of funds the cappies have is whatever money was brought along when the POP promoted.

You usually can do with a small number, although the more the better. In any case, it's more important to make sure they have money (low taxes, profitable industries) than to worry about their numbers per se.

If your Government Type is Interventionist, your capis will not upgrade factories. They can't - you have to manually do it.

Also, do they have to be in the same province in a large enough size for each different culture (e.g. Swedish/Norwegian/Danish)or is it ok if you have a few small-numbered groups that are spread out across different provinces?
I believe Capital doesn't care what language their associates speak.

Thanks, what about building factories though? I can't do it either when I am interventionist.

EDIT - I do seem to be getting at least some building activity now, although I still find I have to finance the project if it is ever to get off the ground.

It's just a matter of how much money they have. Keep their taxes low and check the pop screens for what might be preventing middle-class pops from promoting to capis. They'll eventually pick up the pace, but in the early stages of industrialization you'll always see capis having a hard time starting new factories - at least with the less-than-perfect countries I play. Maybe American and French capis do it better.

American and French (among others) capitalists start with factories from which to draw income...others will need some state help to get that first factory going anytime soon.

I am aware of all listed methods. They can work reasonably for the typical country, but they can't handle a mass of Chinese farmers moving to the cities for work. 10K jobs are getting filled within couple of months :)

That is not true. Capitalists can`t upgrade factories at state capitalism, not interventionism.
Oi? What is the Brazilian late-game Conservative Party then? I thought it was interventionist.
