While riding a bus into the CBD along Brisbane's Busway network when a flash of brilliance came to me out of nowhere. We can make our own busways in Skylines. Here's how:

First you draw a bit of road completely separate from your main road system and then build a bus depot and a fire station attached to it. If you don't build the firestation the bus depot will burn down.

DsNzZ2R.jpg

You then draw a network where you want your busses to go, being careful not to connect it to normal traffic roads. You will also need to de-zone any plots that end up attached to it.

eSRA9fD.jpg

Then place a bus route along your new busway (It's in white.)

gAvzJg3.jpg

It works perfectly and gives you an efficient gridlock free bus service. It's much more nimble and easier to place then a rail or highway system through a built city.

Sy21ihH.jpg

The only way this could be better is if we had specifically designated bus roads so it could be integrated into the main grid.

Enterprising city builders could also use the asset creator to make pre-fab busway stops.

I'll stick with bus lanes and regular routes. But it's an interesting concept.

In Denmark we just use bus pits for special bus routes - Basically shallow pits that are wide enough that cars will fall in, but busses pass right over. It let's the buses get through neighbourhoods directly, while forcing regular car traffic onto main roads.

We do have reserved lanes/roads for buses, emergency vehicles or others in Canada, but it's enforced by signalization and if needed the police, not road hazards.

Shame we can't build any of Campbell Newman's tunnels to go under the city (god that guy was obsessed with tunnels). The BaT tunnel was the final straw. "Oh look, lets combine a bus way and a train line and put them both, together, underground, on top of each other, in the same tunnel. lol

Did you really need to quote the entire post, including images, Takedown? :p

We do have reserved lanes/roads for buses, emergency vehicles or others in Canada, but it's enforced by signalization and if needed the police, not road hazards.

Don't have those in Denmark - Civilian traffic is required by law to pull aside in any way they can if an emergency vehicle is trying to get past (only when sirens are on of course)

On the highways there's a ½ lane at the outer edge for emergency vehicles and breakdowns.

It's called a hard shoulder.

On topic: I would like bus lanes as well.

And bike lanes.

Bus roads are a must have! And I would like the stick the pathsways to elevated roads, just to make "stairs", this way an elevated bus network is possible.
In Germany we have one too, in Oberhausen.

I still keep trying to fit everything into a tiny square (thanks a lot SimCity!) so It'll probably take me a while to find room for something like this in one of my cities.. :b but it's a pretty good idea :)

It's called a hard shoulder.

In Danish it translates into the curb - Sort of. It's filled with a pattern of material that makes a loud, buzzing sound as you go over it - to keep sleepy drivers and drunk ones from driving into it.

Interesting concept that I'd not considered, Thanks! While not exactly space efficient till we have a better solution (roads with bus lanes) it certainly is a creative solution and one that probably adds some nice flavor to city if integrated well.
