How to become shogun after shogun declared war on me?

So the shogun declared war on me but I am soundly winning the war , I however not notice how I can take his place as shogun in the peacescreen. Do I have to make him(ashikaga) a vassal?
I am playing ironman, so can't really afford to experiment.

Take Kyoto and leave Ashikaga with at least with one province. In the peace deal first select independence and then provinces. There is no need to keep Ashikaga alive if you don't want them to be.

You don't need to select independence. Just take Kyoto and you'll be shogun with all Ashikaga's Daimyos as yours. Besides, when you shogun declares war on you, you'll already independent.
