You have to consider agility. Jets of the post WW II era were faster than their prop counter parts, but far less maneuverable. Until guided missiles show up, it was still a gun fight and maneuverability counted for points. In Korea, for example P-38s, P-51s and other prop planes were being replaced, but still held their own flying in formation. I'm not saying they did great, but it wasn't the whole-sale slaughter you might think.

And remember the adage: Quantity has a quality of its own.

I was studying the AI behavior just now regarding interception, and found out that something interesting. For example, despite the AI's overwhelming superiority, it is still quite tactical in its deployment of planes. For example, when I placed 5k fighters on intercept mission, it will send just enough fighters (as long as it has the number in its reserve) to achieve air superiority (2k bombers, 7k fighters). Once I increase my number to 30k fighters, it will send even more (50k fighters, 15k bombers) to maintain the advantage.

What this means is that there is a way to turn around, as long as I can trick the AI and concentrate my planes accordingly...

Are your jet-2:s modified with +5 agility and an agility-boosting designer company? Those, especially the first one, are extremely important if you want to massacre enemy fighters.

Stick SPAAs inside divisions to negate enemy air superiority in combat, and focus on bleeding them out with lots of small encirclements.

It will take way too long to grind 100k+ planes down conventionally.

This is how devastating enemy air superiority can be, nuking my troops and destroying airfields everywhere. I need to be on an offensive, or spammed enough fighters to intercept. Going to be extremely micro-intensive plus there are so many fronts out there to manage. :/

There can be only one.

Yeah I know but it is nearly impossible to win for me. Not sure about others. So feel like giving up.

Germany is a land and aerial power while Japan is a naval power. Since I share a border with them, it is hard to remain defensive while I invade their SE holdings (which takes time).

The only way to defend is to spam a lot of troops(probably 3 million plus), AA, fort and aircraft at the western borders. But that will take a lot of time.

A faster way would be of course focus on a major land offensive on Berlin (concentrate all my airwings and breakthrough units) while nuking my way. But it will take time since I need to travel from Moscow to Berlin.

Not sure whether I want to continue. I wasn't initially playing for world conquest. Just out of fun or historical purpose.

First you don't need to win air superiority. I can capture Berlin in 1943 with a 1-2k planes when the German still have 15k planes. My planes are for a brief of support for land offensive not for killing enemy fighters. Both sides can stay on the air and bomb each other as long as the weaker don't get outnumbered by 2:1 ratio. Even with that you can switch to another air zone.

For once I really don't see how you even got to 1978, the game is not really meant to be played that long.

Technically, the game never ends, so you can play as long as you can. I choose to play longer. I have speed run world conquests before (around 2 years ago??), but this time I choose to micromanage and play at my pace. It took me eight years to subjugate Soviet Union, invaded from Manchuria without German help . Of course,I had made some tactical mistakes along the way.

You should have long taken care of most of their strategic ressources especially rubber and oil.

I have taken most of Middle East, Russia and USA. Unfortunately, the Axis got a free holdings in India and SEA due to a botched diplomatic event (US declared war on Allies, and UK fell quickly -- allowing Germany to dictate the treaty without having to fight). Mexico was given to Axis because both of us took part in taking down USA. So I do have majority of oil, not rubber (in Italian Malaya and Indies).

If they do have some US/Mexican oil fields, than I wonder why you aren't raping all the German convoys with your subs (they have to transport these resources over sea), after all you're supposed to be a Naval Power.
Haven't thought of it but thanks. The Italy, Vichy France and Germany (Nationalist Spain too) do have sizeable navy to at least defy my blockade repeatedly. Not going to be easy since most of Pacific ports (Hawaii, Australia) are in their hands.

Planes use a very high amount of fuel at these numbers. No oil = no planes. You have over 640 something nukes, why aren't you bombing them into oblivion?
Got thought of it -- basically quickly pre-empty strike entire Europe mainland with my high-level jet. Can try. But not sure whether enemy can recover quickly due to their massive industry and air force (3 times of mine).

Why even attack through Turkey, it's perhaps the hardest terrain you could possibly attack, and it nets you nothing significant.

I was not attacking through Turkey. In fact, I was playing defensive (with level 10 forts and fully upgraded AA) there. But the enemy air superiority allows them to overcome my defense, encircling quite a number of divisions.

Also if you want to grind down the enemy airforce, you have to put your fighters on air-superiority, not interception.
I did put on air superiority but if the enemy uses five times your fighter size, you will lose quickly (11k planes vs 57k). The key problem is the enemy ability to bring forth air supremacy, inflicting massive damage on your infantry, air fields and infrastructure.

Do you see that small icon next to the assigned missions of the Air-region?

I did try, but it makes no difference at all. The key issue is that enemy has such huge numerical disparity that if you increase your forces (whether quality or quantity), the enemy will just put more planes there. 9k vs 30k planes will quickly bring down your air superiority to red, whether increased efficiency or not. Of course, I can counter that by putting more planes (Which I still have a lot in reserves) but that will be extremely micro-intensive (and something I don't want -- since there are so many other fronts to manage ).

Also I don't know if you intended this, but you have no CAS whatsoever and you are only carrying out Strategic bombing, which is very weak and nets you zero benefits. You want to switch your TACs on close air support if you want to support your troops

I wasn't planning to fight the Germans at my western borders (Turkey, European Russia). My plan was to hunker down, built lots of forts and intercepts. While I focuses on naval invasion of the Dutch East Indies and Malaya which had plenty of troops (more than 20 divisions in Italian Malaya).

I was using Strategic bombing, because I was testing out whether if I nuked the airfields, how long can I maintain air superiority with my current number of fighters. This is just in part of my plan to prepare for an offensive into Berlin (basically nuked my way there).

And again this entire grind is not really necessary if you just make a few good Naval landings and fight anywhere except Turkish mountains.

Not sure what this means, but I have not started fighting with Germans. The screenshot I shows was a test. In any case, I only just finished the war with USA in the late 1960. Spent my long time building up forts and AA until 1978 (Basically the initial plan to remain on passive defense). So the actual grind with Germans have not started. I was too daunted by the prospect of a long war with Germans. So I keep testing different ideas. But I have no courage to execute :(.

Did you think about leveling the whole Axis industry with hordes of T3 rockets? :)

Okay, I also have a similar idea but something even more hardcore. Nuklearius is right. I have 600+ nukes that I can use to level the entire Axis industry due to my proximity in Europe. This plan is going to require an extremely long set-up time. I need to set up an extensive convoy raiding system and mobilise my entire manpower reserves (I have 8 million plus unused) for land, air and navy. For example, in European Russia, I can put at least 3 million man there and 50 000 planes there. Basically, once ww3 started, I want an extremely decisive advantage (like a giant per-empitive strike on a level that Germany or Israel couldn't achieve against their targets (Russia during Barbarossa, Arab states during Six-day war). Every European states in axis' hands have to be nuked at one go! During this long setup (training more men), I need to conquer more territories though (South America, Sweden), so I have more industries, resources and land.
