How to be the sunni & shia Caliph at the same time?

Not sure it's going to work my guess is you'll lose one of them the moment you unpause.
The Sunni (d_sunni) and Shia (d_shiite) caliphates are landed titles in the game, so you'll want to use the give_title console command.
In the console, type in "give_title d_sunni" and/or "give_title d_shiite" and the titles will be granted to the character that you're currently playing as.

you sure? Wouldn't that mean that the religious head of the shia religion was sunni? Can the game handle the leader of a religion not being of that religion?
It can happen organically. This was many many patches ago, but when the Mongol Empire would reform the Tengri faith after conquering Constantinople, the religious head title would get conferred to the Ecumenical Patriarch. Back then, the reformation mechanic would grant the pagan religious head title to the highest-ranking theocratic vassal, even if that vassal was supposed to be the head of another religion! I'd imagine that certain mechanics would be broken, but the title could be simultaneously held. In that game, I think that the Patriarch-High Priest wasn't able to call Great Holy Wars for Tengriism because the Orthodox religious head title couldn't call the equivalent war.
I haven't checked it myself for the OP's situation, but my gut makes me think that calling a Jihad for the Sunni faith would prevent him for doing so for the Shiite faith and vice versa.
I don't think that's possible, but apparently pre-game Muhammad seems to be only character who had both the Shia and Sunni Caliphate title.
And his nephew Ali. But I've done it myself as I said before, it's not mere speculation.
I recently saw a Sunni who was the Shia Caliph. The Shia uprising happened in Andalusia and then a Umayyad claimant took over and became Shia Caliph despite being Sunni.

Yeah, the Shia caliph in my current game is a reformed Germanic pagan and has been for several generations. He even is listed as the head of the religion in the ledger, with his King title rather than Caliph. I really want to know if he can declare Jihads. He is part of my house and I'm debating trying to rig succession so I can inherit it somehow.

Yesterday I started a Quick abbysad game where I reformed 3 pagan religions with temporal leadership, I gave all the titles to my Brother who was the caliph.
later I killed him and Inherited every title and was head of several religons.
I have yet to find out if I can declare GHW for all those religons.

I had never even thought about this before, but it would be kind of nice to have an Islamic "mend the schism" event between Shia and Sunni.
He's currently my vassal. It won't allow revocation of that specific title because it is the head of a religion. I'm not sure if that would change if I had a claim on it though, which is worth a shot.
I'm playing iron man. I still may do it just because. My only real goal this game is seeing how many other independent Germanic rulers I can nurture without just granting independence to them. Since he is already my vassal it wouldn't even interfere with that.
