Steam is not even the biggest problem, it's the new Crusader Kings 2 way of adding new content to the game. I spend hundreds of hours playing EU3 and I only had to buy the game once, I spent some extra cash on new units but thats all just flavour. I seriously wonder how much money I'm going to end up spending before EU4 is on the level of content of EU3, it's probably going to be over €100...
Using Steam just makes these things more exspensive as Gamersgate and Amazon usually have better and more frequent sales than Steam does, so we get double screwed.
Oh well at least EU3 is still fun.
Both GG and Steam have regularly -75% sales. As for spending money on EU3, I have bought the game and all expansions at release, so I think I've sank about €130 into the game.Steam is not even the biggest problem, it's the new Crusader Kings 2 way of adding new content to the game. You have to run the game with the DLC once with Steam, then you can use them without them without Steamit's all good and peachy but since few months back when I run CK2 without Steam I don't have any DLC's activated ingame, which might as well be as not running without Steam at all. Could be problem on my side, there was even thread about it, but we were unable to find reason why.

Since adds are everywhere, I cannot understand they still work. Most of the time my brain just filters them out.
Also: Swedish public broadcast doesn't have adds?![]()
Nobody eats at McDonalds because of their commercials, yet everyone has eaten at McDonalds...
Unless Paradox have been spewing pure unadulterated bafflegab for the past year, I'd say that the initial purchase price will give you an out-of-the-box experience superior to any expansion/patch state of EU3.I seriously wonder how much money I'm going to end up spending before EU4 is on the level of content of EU3

Just wanted to chime in saying I'm disappointed that Paradox won't be offering EU4 without Steam. I stopped playing the Football Manager games, now I'll stop buying Paradox games as well.
I love digital distribution - I bought all my Paradox titles at GamersGate. But I don't like Steam.
I know, Paradox won't care. But I wanted to tell that one guy who said he's not going to buy it on Steam that I won't either. So, now they've lost two customers.
You don't even need to buy through Steam, can simply buy through GG.
I don't understand the whole Anti-Steam thing. It's like some strange cult where Steam is some big evil application put out by Valve to conquer the known world.
I did that, and apparently I get Steam anyway.
A company whose product/service is compulsory never remains friendly and docile. Anti-steam people are talking about what's behind the curtain, not the cooing blonde floor models waving us in. No corporation wants to conquer the known world (other than the PLA and MicroSoft). Many service companies want to pin customers against the wall and run their pockets.
Even if they're not running our pockets just yet, we resent being pinned against the wall.

Paradox chose to have Steam compulsory (for install ONLY) because it made economic sense & they could use the amazing Steamworks. I don't know how this is anti-Steam it's not like they forced Paradox over a desk and made them make it Steam only. (I don't have any problem with it being so, just seems a lot of the attack is about compulsory Steam)
Also the conquering bit was a joke about how paranoid most of the anti-Steam cult seem to be.
Having to install a program is hardly being pinned against a wall and the comparisons with Microsoft are just completely wrong.
In what way is Valve 'pinning you to the wall'? Are they forcing you to download Steam? No. The publishers decide whether or not to use Steam. Are the publishers forcing you to buy the game? No. You decide whether or not to buy the game. Good grief, conspiracy theorists these days.
