Playing the demo. I have a couple of unlanded sons and I want to make them barons rather than counts so I don't actually give away part of my duchy but I cant figure out how to do this? Any help?

If you just want to grnt it to a random person, there is a button at the top of the barony page the creates a radom person to rule it. not sure its the best thing to do, sinceyou dont get a relations boost with any of your current vassals, then again when they all hate you its nice to hae a new baron who i nuetral towards you

Two methods as explained:

1.) Go to Grand Landed Title button under diplomacy for the character you want to give it to, which will show baronies.
2.) If you want to assign a random, new character, then click on the Province, find the barony/church/city, right-click on the image and the button to the left will do that.

He will be of your culture and religion.

That's good picking 800 barons after the Norman conquest was going to be a pain. As it is it gets pretty funny when you have 30 titles to give out. I feel like I'm down the list so far I'm just pulling people off the street saying, "Hey you don't seem to be a drooling idiot, would you like to be count of Wessex?"

Hehe :) I start out giving counties to all my loyal courtiers, with the baronies included. Giving them a county is +40 in relations, if you include two additional baronies with that it's +80. Plus, if you give them the entire thing, they get to pick the barons. The barons won't be grateful to you, but it saves you a lot of clicking.

I only resort to random barons after I'm done rewarding all my courtiers. My chancellor gets some land, my marshal, by lord spiritual... and so on.

A nice way to gain a ton of piety is to create the bishopric first, and then give the bishop the county. This makes him an archbishop and gives you a load of piety.

However, if the barons are grateful to the new count, that probably means good opinion of him and thus more troops and taxes flow to the count, and then to you, while if they were appointed by you but don't like the liege count then it reduces the resources of the the count. Am I thinking about this the right way?

But I need a vacant barony first right? In the demo they are all full and I have the option to revoke title but can't because of authority. Boo.

You'll get a ton of personal lands, including Baronies, that you can dole out if you play as William or Harold in Normandy and Norway, respectively. Of course, you'll have to actually conquer England first.

I find the main source of vacant baronies is a victorious Holy War. I do pick bishops myself.

If you look at the rise of new nobility in the early middle ages then that example is not entirely unfeasible.

Two methods as explained:

1.) Go to Grand Landed Title button under diplomacy for the character you want to give it to, which will show baronies.
2.) If you want to assign a random, new character, then click on the Province, find the barony/church/city, right-click on the image and the button to the left will do that.

Hmm... Hate to bring this thread up again, but I don't see a newer one about this, so hopefully it won't get lost of the shuffle ;)..

Anyhow, Option #1 works like a charm if you want it too, however, Option #2, I don't seem to have the "barony" option in the grant title window... I'm playing as William of Normady and just conquered England, so naturally got loads and loads of titles to start handing out, and figured I would work out the Baronies first...

So for example, Middlessex (I assume bad spelling.. sorry.. But where London is today, heh) has the Barony of Tottenheim, however, I can't seem to find that title in the "Grant Titles" option (only cities and bishop level ones are there, besides naturally the "count" level of the province itself..) Am I not suppose to give that out and keep it? or am I missing something? maybe it's the 4AM thinking in me that just simply can't find it and I'll look closer at it tomorrow, but figured, I would post about it here in case anyone can answer it before I get up tomorrow, before I go for another marathon session myself, heh. (still gotta kick Norway out of England...)

thanks,

thanks,
If you want to give away a whole county, DON'T pick anyone but the bishops. You get no benefit at all from picking barons or mayors and then handing them off as vassals to someone else. You only benefit from creating bishops (you get piety).

Check if the barony of Tottenham doesn't already have a ruler. On the province view, both coats of arms on the barony image should be yours if you want to give it to someone. If the upper left coat of arms is not yours, then there's already someone serving as baron of tottenham. Click on that coat of arms to find out who it is.

If Tottenham is the seat of the county (i.e. its image is displayed in the upper half of the province view) then it belongs to the count of Middlesex (you?) and you cannot give it away separately. If you give the county to someone he gets that barony and makes it his seat. The only exemption is if you give the county to the local bishop, then the bishop will make his bishopric the county seat and the barony can then be given away to someone separately.
