How the **** do Mauraders use the L-Gates?

Someone please explain that to me? Considering my empire had to spend considering time (exploration) and resources to research and discover all the L-Gate insights how to the marauders just "know" how to use the L-Gates when they go on their Jihad and try and take over the galaxy?

This is also really f'gin annoying when they are just doing raids. How can they use the gates, or wormholes? They shouldn't be allowed. They should have to use the FTL lanes like any barbarian civilization.

To me it just seems like a computer AI cheat to make the players life more difficult and actually turns the gates, and wormholes into liabilities instead of advantages for researching the stupid things.

The L-Gates spawn in a "locked" state. No one can use them. Once you or anyone else opens the L-Cluster the L-Gates are set to an "unlocked" state, allowing ships to use them. That is the entire point of the mechanic. The research you do is not to learn how to "use" the L-Gates, as they are functionally Gateways, which you already know how to use at that point. The research is to figure out how to open them across the galaxy.

You didn't research the L-Gate insights to learn how to use the gates, you learned how to open them. All the gtes in the galaxy are in working condition, just closed. Also, Marauders aren't exactly barbarians: they have level 3 weapons and they live in habitats, so they obviously have the Star Fortress technology.

Perhaps the marauders do have the wormhole travel tech, accounting for being able to use wormholes.

As for L-gates - as said, they just open when somewhen gets the tech and does the project. I've seen the AI open the L-gates before me once (I was holding off because I didn't fancy the potential fight and busy work of scanning and securing the cluster. Plus I'd had a series of ongoing wars so my fleet was a bit smaller than I like for exploring the cluster.)

Normal gateways... I've not actually watched to see if they use them or not, or if they have to do anything special to get access.

Both crisis and marauders can use normal gateways, but with same rules as the empires. Basically, they can only go between friendly/neutral gateways, but they cannot go in or go out from a hostile gateway.

If I recall, if you use the console to switch to a Marauder Empire, you'll find they do in fact have the wormhole travel tech, and knowledge of every wormhole in the galaxy.

That actually seems like an oversight, except for in the case of marauders that your empire hired you generally aren't going to let a bunch of space pirates use your strategic assets like that.

Well, hostiles cannot use OUR gateways - meaning gateways that are in our control. But after they have taken it - or destroyed the station, making it uncontrolled - it makes perfect sense they could utilize it.

There's already a way to do that. Attack their fleet on its way to its target. Personally, I ignore them. Those fleets are on their way to attack another empire, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

After you activate them, they work just like Wormholes. Simple as that.

As others have said, the L-Gate Insight Technology unlocks the L-Gates. It doesn't create them. They are already running.

I feel the same way about being unable to close borders to empires that are other people's subjects, especially when I'm a purifier type empire.

Which is why I would like a policy, yes you could chose to attack them now assuming that you constantly watch your borders and check every neutral flagged fleet moving through your territory.
If you bar the Marrauders the way, they need to instantly turn hostile towards you. That has to be the tradeoff. You can not expect a Event driven country like the Marrauders to do something more intelligent then that.

And do you really want the Marrauders wrecking your economy on their way to the target?
