Generally, How should I set up my bus lines? Do I make multiple stops in residential neighborhood? Or do I just make one bus stop in residential and connect it to commercial, industry, attractions, etc.?
It varies. A small residential area may only need one stop, located in a spot accessible to all. A larger one may need a few stops.
Don't overdo it with stops though, or buses could spend more time stopped than moving. Shorter routes will have fewer buses on it. Long routes may have a very large number of buses, and especially if/when they bunch up, they can make traffic worse than no buses.
A straight route will bring CIMs back the same way they came. If you have a loop, you may want to run two routes in opposite directions. (Clockwise and counter-clockwise). Otherwise a CIM might have a short trip out, but a very long trip back. (Imagine you are riding a hand around a clock face. If you get on at 3 and off at 4, on the return ride you get on at 4 and ride 5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-1-2-3 instead of directly back to 3.
Also, you can build pedestrian paths through neighborhoods to help people from other areas get to/from bus stops (and metros, trains, or just walking period) quickly/easily, and that will increase ridership.
i try to make sure an attraction is within walking distance of public transport. it doesn't need to be a bus; trains and metros will deliver more people. as will ships and planes.
