The Khan spawns several fleets, indefinitely, of 30k fleet power until he is defeated. This is a mid-game crisis.

He MIGHT die of old age, or assassination, or might die in combat, but given that the Khan basically conquered half the galaxy over a period of 100 years in one of my saves? I am starting to suspect he might just never die until you beat him which is fair. My issue is honestly generating and maintaining a fleet of 30k to fight him and watching Aspec's playthrough, I am starting to suspect that generating massive fleets before the midgame is becoming exceedingly rare? Or I am just playing with too few habitable planets or something idk. It's genuinely hard now to say the very least so I can't complain.

100 years? Mr. Khan isn't supposed to make it more than a decade or so (by the reasons you outlined), so that sounds like a quite significant bug.

Yeah I just had to quit a game (admit defeat) against the Great Khan, who had multiple 30k fleets romping around the galaxy. At the start of the crisis, I had maybe a 5k or 6k fleet, and all the AI empires were inferior or pathetic compared to me. So yeah, I'd say something is definitely up with the balancing...

As far as I understand there wasn't a Khan / Crisis / FE & AE / L-Gate / etc. re-balance which could be troublesome. For my first [and current] playthrough I delayed the onset of the mid & late games, lowered the crisis strength, AND lowered the difficulty level by one level figuring that I'd need all that after hearing the initial complaints.

As for my playthrough I might be able to assemble a 30K fleet but the odds that I could do anything against MULTIPLE 30K fleets would be next to zero. Then again I play fairly passively and not-at-all optimally. More aggressive [better than me] players should be able to get by.

When the crisis started, I think the large fleets were 20kish together with a number of smaller fleets that seemed to be between 6k and 10k. I'm not sure if these fleets combined into the 30k fleets, or whether the fleet sizes were beginning to swell because of conquered territory.

The Khan was particularly devastating because I had just opened up the L-gate, and there just happened to be an L Gate next to his territory, so he was able to spread all across the galaxy instead of being localised, and because all AI empires were so uselessly weak he had territory everywhere very quickly.

There was a chance that I could have assembled a 30k fleet by hiring mercenaries from the other raiders together with my own, and I had close to enough economic power to actually (almost) maintain the mercenary costs. If I had just had a little more time, I could maybe have got a fleet powerful enough to beat the Khan's 30k fleets one at a time, and because he was so spread out I maybe could have finally got the best of him.

I might have pulled this off, but then he seized my main generator world with a 36k fleet, which means I wouldn't have any energy to pay the mercenaries who were the real backbone of my fleet. At that point I had only about 26k, but I spent every last available exotic resource I had to pump all my weapon and shield stats using edicts, and I actually managed to beat his 36k fleet.

And then I got some bug where even though I had destroyed the outpost, I couldn't land my troops to recapture the generator planet because "an enemy space station is preventing your troops from landing." :/

But I probably would have ultimately lost anyway, so I threw in the towel...

I'm waiting for the crisis to spawn (1.25x power), but I did take on an awakened FE. The FE had multiple fleets of 70-80k (I'm guessing 6+), so I wouldn't have been able to win (I had 4ish fleets ranging from 70-80k at something around 750 naval cap?) if the FE didn't make a critical mistake by attempting to attack the opposite side of my empire. I just went straight for their home-world and they sent one fleet of 80k or so one after another towards 90% of my entire fleet, so the FE never really had a chance. Thank goodness of brain-dead AI.

I cannot imagine building up the economy to fight an awakened FE before 2350 (had the end-game set to start around 2400 to give me some breathing space) with the current sector behavior and general difficulty/inconvenience of managing 20+ planets. I only really started snow-balling with my economy and my alloy production around 2360 or so.

I think awakened FE are balanced towards the new fleet power though- back in 2.1 I remember awakened FE having significantly larger fleets of 100k+. I only occupied a tiny corner of the galaxy and my naval cap is still pretty low to be dealing with awakened FE from 2.1. I would have been thoroughly outmatched in 2.1 whereas now they have a slight superiority overall.

Crisis fleets on 1.5x are about 30-35k in fleetpower, with the guard fleets protecting the sterilization hubs/portals being 73k for the Unbidden and 85k for the Contingency.

The slower pop growth speed is what really sets development speed back, especially with "new" colonies having halved speed. You can be decades post founding and still have a lovely colony ship.

Right now in 2400 in my playthough I have a 43K fleet, a 30K fleet, a 60K Federation fleet, and a couple of smaller fleets. I didn’t play optimallyat all. So it’s certainly possible to have more than “30K combined” in LeGuin.

The L-Gate event had nanite pouring out 30K fleets every where every ten year or so, I had some luck with mercenaries fleet and defeated maybe two fleets by literaly throwing everything i had, but after they devaoured one of my big planet I just lost interest. So i guess the crisis part is really working :p no happy endings.

It's harder to assemble a big fleet than it used to be but I've had 150k ready for the L-cluster at ~2300-2310.

Well the currently problem that even at reduced crisis strenght it seems like the crisis is not balanced with the new economy in place. Having enough to deal with even a mid level crisis would require a lot of effort or a delayed mid-level crisis year. By the time the Khan popped on my game i had around 24k + Whatever bastion i had available. And the main Khan fleet was at 33k, and spawned more of these as it went on, i was "Overwhelming" to every single other AI that was not a Fallen Empire at that point, which does worry me that the military power of the galaxy compared to even a mid-level crisis would require a alliance of several AIs to even slow down something like the Khan.

The Khan indeed comes early, but submitting to him isn’t that lethal. The economy is kinds exponential, by 2400 you can have quite powerful fleets.

I am currently in a grand admiral scaling game in the beta at about 2375 and have about 120k fleet power and could probably support 300k with my naval cap. Bottleneck is the alloy production. Even though I have three ecumenopoli they are barely at 20% production capacity because it takes so long to fill them up with pops even with massive resettlement from all other full planets.
I am guessing I will be ready to fight the 3x crisis by the time it arrives but we will have to wait and see...

For me the nanites where the main AI killer. Not sure if they delayed the Khan, but a few years after I finally defeated them the Khan spawned and wasn't really that strong. I played scaling grand admiral. AI was pretty much able to defeat the normal fleets of the Khan. I had to defeat his personal one (which was very easy with my nanite killing fleet).

edit:
never got to crisis since I stopped because of lag.

It's harder to assemble a big fleet than it used to be but I've had 150k ready for the L-cluster at ~2300-2310.
Thats very good. I also killed the Khan instead of submission but don't have fleet that strong can you tell me your Empire and Galaxy Settings you played in that?

That said I am currently running an equaly promising run with a FanXeno+Mechanist+PopGrowth Species I am already at 300+ pop in 2250 and growth and alloy production is now starting to ramp up exponentially.
