how to play bizance? after more than 30 games of trying to get off to a good start, I have found the technique that works in 30% of cases, alas in the long term I cannot resist, my last, to combine with Hungary, with a royal wedding, I help against the Poles and win a fat peace which makes me rich for a while, but Hungary breaks the alliance after conquering Wallachia and declares war on me, which leads me to buy mercenaries and go bankrupt, the peasant revolt that wins and my vassals that betray me, the end

the biggest problem was the troops, in the long run I found myself at 3000 men out of the 18 units! because revolts, wars lead to losses that were hell to replace! I made 3 barracks, put military points to increase the number, the order "increased lifting" only my fleet survived, after my bad experience on the previous game I kept a powerful fleet to block the bosphorus

if not for the start of the game, I sell titles, which brings me 200, I accept a command mission, then take over land. I attack Epirus (if he has no ally, which often makes me start over) to take him as a vassal and obtain a powerful duchy. improves relations: Albania, hospitable, because they can be called, and Wallachia, then Venice to prevent him from declaring war on me. I do one against 3 galley and a big ship, and I increase my army to 13 units, then recruit 3-4 mercenaries and declare war on the Ottoman, I take Macedonia then Galipolis and after that depends on the game.

how playing bizance ?

Historically, Byzantiums fate was pretty much sealed when they lost the flatter lands of Anatolia and with them their sources of good cavalry. That happened way before the EU IV timeframe, so Byzantium losing is, well, historical. :/

For an ahistorical outcome, have you tried searching the forum? Byzantium is very popular, so you should have luck. (Especially if you use the proper spelling :p )

If you managed to beat the ottos, the hard part is done. Once you have kicked them out of Europe you shouldn't have too much issues in finding strong allies.

I'm not getting the 3/18 troops, do you have an army of only 3 k? and a forcelimit of 18? that doesn't sound right...

yes the problem was the military strength from 1510, suddenly I can no longer complete my troops and keep a reserve secondly Hungary who declares war on me, then to combine with almost 200 relations, can it be that I did not create Bulgaria? that said, here are the 2 black points of this campaign. I did not succeed in time to find a powerful ally once Hungary broke the alliance for no reason, or I missed something

Well, Hungary is only useful (yet nearly mandatory) for that first Otto war. In that first war you HAVE to take the Greek coastal provinces from the Ottos. Yo don't have to take all Balkan provinces from them in the first war, just enough to be able to block the straits, so from then on they won't be a fcator in Europe any longer and you can take their European provinces in small bunches in subsequent wars. After they are eliminated as an existential threat, I tend to ignore the Ottos anyway, or, to be more precise, just take the Constantinople trade provinces, I usually do not bother with Eastern Anataolian lands when playing Byz.

I generally start buddying up with Poland and/or Austria (depends on rival setup and some other things) at the very beginning of that first Otto war. Immediately after that war is won, ditch Hungary anyway and maybe even rival them (depending on their relationship to Austria that may not be the best idea, but un-ally in any case). An alliance with either Poland or Austria (with a lot of luck even both of them) should be automtaically possible after that first war, retaking of your cores (so no revolts, unless something has been changed?) drastically enlarging your power-base. From then on improve with Russia (rather still Muscovy at this point) and they, as orthodox, should be willing to ally in quite a short time.(Lately they are weak in a lot of games, so maybe that won't even be necessary, but shoould at least be possible)

Hungary is useless after the first war, they will not like you any longer after taking Wallachia (what they will do in an instant after the Ottos are "out of the way") or they will drag you in a war with either Poland, or even far more likely, with Austria (for Austria's PU, which they will nearly always go for nowadays). Just ditch them, get one of the nearer bigboys as a temporary "security-blanket" and gobble up the rest of the Balkans. You should also very soon be able to attack Venice. After all the Balkans are consolidated with the megpolis Constantinople in your bag there should be no immediate existential threats around and you can start to do as you please.

Hungary is generally not a great defensive alliance, both because they often want your land and you will want their land for missions. After the first Ottomans war I like to butter up to Muscovy.

sorry for the delay, I was very busy, so I joined Poland, which won me over with the Ottomans, but now it's the Mamelook that is destroying me! especially my last and great game where I had the best emperor! which put all my points at 10! which allowed me to be ahead of everyone and develop my provinces

but alas the mamelook with 100,000 more Tunisian men and another shaves me!

the Austrians having conquered everyone! even France, as much to say that it is hard to have allies, the Spaniards having betrayed me during the declaration of war of the Arabs

how are you doing in the long term?

FYI I was the guy who wrote this so thanks for sharing. I was really surprised that people enjoyed this strategy so much.

This will work for 1.32 and I am more than happy to talk someone through it if you send me a DM.

I've not tested this for 1.33 given this strategy was dependent on fort mothballs which no longer happens in 1.33. However, when 1.33 proper goes live I plan to release my first ever YouTube video with an adaptation of this. It'll unfortunately probably involve Mercs because I think you'll need more men to assault a fully maintained Gallipoli, but in principle it should still work.

It is the best Byzantium opener, in my opinion. I followed it and then almost did a one-faith WC afterwards.

My lifehack at the moment:
1) The stars must descend in the following combination: Epirus enters into an alliance with some small state (Hospitallers, Cyprus, Ragusa), if it concludes with Albania, Venice, Genoa - everything is bad. If the Ottomans made an alliance with the Crimea, everything is bad. I'm looking at these conditions!
2) We collect the fleet as much as possible and the army under the limit.
3) Having concluded alliances with everyone with whom we can, we attack Epirus, we devour his ally and Epirus territories.
4) If by this time the Ottoman is already standing on the border and preparing to attack, we recruit 3 armies of mercenaries in the Peloponnese and wait: he should change his mind about attacking Byzantium.
5) The desire to fight with someone will not disappear from him and he will go to Asia Minor and declare war on Dulkadir or Jandar (whichever of them will be weaker). We pray that they will not be in alliance with the Crimea.
6) As soon as Osman crossed the Bosporus, we transfer all the armies to Constantinople. As soon as he declared war on the small countries in Anatolia and is already storming their fortresses, we declare war on him for the return of Galipoli.
7) Our fleet blocks the Bosporus, the army gets up in Galipoli, we make a volley of guns and wait for the capture of the fortress. Everything! Mercenaries can be dismissed - they are no longer needed, Osman will not be able to cross the blockaded Bosphorus and all the Ottoman Balkans are in our hands!
8) It is important to understand that if he is at war with the Crimea or in alliance with him, then he can cross the northern coast of the Black Sea and nothing will save you.
9) If everything is ok, then just occupy all the provinces in the Balkans and wait for him to get tired - over time, his allies will get tired and you can take them out of the war through the white world. At the same time, your military score will increase.
10) To get income - it is important to split your army into all occupied provinces and get profit from them.
11) In the end, all that remains is to take all the provinces and a lot of money

+ Don't forget estate bonuses and they can give you money to cover your debts. Watch out for Venice - she can attack while you are at war, although very unlikely. While the war is going on and you are waiting in the Balkans, improve relations with Austria and Poland. They will help you divide Hungary in the future. After the defeat of the Ottomans in the Balkans, it is important to declare war on Serbia before Hungary or Venice does, you can get Bosnia as a vassal, and all Serbian provinces with a gold mine in Kosovo. Good luck!
