i decided to lay a really long line of road so that i can add a longer line of residential sones this time. and i noticed the highlighted area wasnt going from point a to point b. so now i wonder how that worked out. does it have anything to do with hills in the land or anything?

you mean there were gaps between the zoning grids? It might be a lof of things: terrain, curves, other roads too close by, etc.
