or how often should they beat Poland, how often should they beat the USSR, how often should they invade England, etc.

How often should they win the war?

Of course, right now they tend to win a pretty good majority of the time, but what do you think would be about ideal for some of the circumstances described above?

I'lll try to start things off with a few suggestions, and we can discuss from there.

----------------------------------

Percentage of the games in which Germany does the folowing

(Of course, these percentages will improve with superior gameplay, but the following is assuming, average, middle of the road quality gameplay)
------------------

Conquering Poland: 99%
Conquering France: 85%
Conquering USSR: 35%
Conquering England: 30%
Conquering USA: 1%

Essentially my feelings are that the game should be balanced for a German victory a reasonable ammount of the time, but, on average, the Allies shoud win the majority of the games. (say, 60% of the time or so)

These are just a few suggestions to get discussion brewing, let's hear what the rest of this forum thinks. :)

I assume you're talking about '36 scenario. It should get progressively harder for the Axis the later you start. But I'd lower the Axis chance of defeating USSR to about 1 in 5, and conquering GB (you're talking about actually invading and conquering Britain itself, right?) to about 1 in 20.

The German player should have to make a choice - Either build a navy, play defence against France, and conquer Britain, or build an army, play defense against Britain, and conquer France. To conquer both should require a lot of time and resources, and Germany has neither.

Hands off game

Every time I have played a hands off game as El Salvador in 1939 the Germans have beaten the Poles, then the French, then easily beaten the USSR. I have run this through about 20 times now and it is the same every time. Normal/Normal on the setting and no intervention by me.

Same here. In both standoff games for me, Germany has walked through all opposition in little more than a month or two. Once they ally with Romania (apparently, the other major power in Europe) they absolutely destroy the Soviets. Romania owns land all the way to Tashkent now.

Well, I think defeat of the Poles and French is hardcoded in (I know, it should be possible for AI France to win, but a WWI sim isn't very fun). Defeat of AI USSR seems to be tied to a fault in AI build priorities (which Bolt is very industriously working on right now).

Currently:

Beat Poland : 95 - 99%
Beat France : 90% - 95%
Beat UK : 10% - 15%
Beat USSR : 85 - 90%
Beat USA : 1 - 5%

One side usually wins a landslide victory over the other fairly quickly. Nearly every time.

How it ought to be:

Beat Poland : 95%
Beat France : 70%
Beat UK : 30%
Beat USSR : 50%
Beat USA : 1 - 5%

All should be relatively tough fights, except for Poland.

IMHO, AI Germany should beat AI France 95%+ of the time, just because I suspect the whole game would be awfully boring for pretty much any human played-country (maybe except Japan) if it didn't. I mean, Russia could gobble up Eastern states at leisure, UK or US could counterattack without an amphibious invasion, etc. Saving France should require considerable (and ideally, risky) intervention from a human ally.

Yeah, really... 70% chance of beating France? If they don't beat the French, or the war just drags on across the two province border between France and Germany... Well, then you haven't got World War II, have you? Without intervention the course of history shouldn't be interrupted 30% of the time.

Lets do som maths. With your %s germany would beat USSR 0.95*0.70*0.5=~33% of the time.(Taking account that loosing poland or france means autoloose USSR.)

Well this is all assuming that they invade France in the first place. Ideally, and I think this is a stretch to even hope for, but ideally, Germany would sometimes decide to concentrate on a navy and go after Britain, while defending its borders. Or else attack the USSR before attacking France. Or, I dunno, invade Sweden!

Right now Germany seems fairly predictable. Once they are at war with the Allies they pretty much always seem to roll through France and any other Allied memebers on the continent, and then declare war on the USSR soon afterwards. The wild card is actually how early the Allies declare war on Germany. In my current game they did it just a bit after the Anschluss (and were absolutely pasted for their efforts).
