Well it's quite simple:
I'm an HRE king (Bavaria), and right now I have a commanding lead to be elected emperor. I absolutely do not want this!
Anybody got a foolproof method of preventing being elected? (Really there should be a way to remove yourself from contention).

I guess in that day and age, no one didn't want to be the HRE.

Assassinate a few of the guys who want to elect you, if you can afford it? That is all I can think of.

Especially if you get caught that should lower everyone's opinion of you. Try to assassinate the emperor himself and hopefully get caught doing it. Then try not and die when they attempt assassination on you.

Just try to choose someone else. Find suitable heir and just check if they will support him. If not, try someone else agan. In my game mostly my vassals tried to choose me (6 votes against 4 etc.) so I support German Prince who had 2 votes - half my vassals did the same and thanks to that I wasn't chosen as new emperor...

As a large sized Denmark (integrated into HRE by some weird independence war bug), I simply declared Independence. This seems to work for stopping people voting for you. Didn't help me that I controlled almost half the voters.

the only way ive ever found is cheat, load up the console, and use add_diplomacy ID +30 with ID being the ID number of the guy you want to be emperor. Vote for him to get him in the running and then the AI electors will hopefully vote for him and not you.
Either that or just accept it and pass it on at the first usurpation rebellion but they dont always come.

the game really really needs to have an ability to turn things down. Election, liege given titles and even the new crusade kingdoms. All things that should be accept/decline diplomacy choices are just shoved on you with no choice at all. It doesnt make sense that someone who doesnt want to be emperor would be emperor when hes surrounded by equally worthy candidates who dont want to be and are going out of their way to be.

It really should be set up so that if you vote for someone else then youre out of the running, or have a wee box to tick if you dont want to run or something. Maybe with the option only avialable if you dont have the ambitious trait to fit the theme of the game, but its a thing thats needed or its just silly.

Voting for someone else usually fixes the problem for me, but I am rarely trying not to be emperor since being in the HRE or Byzantine Empire can be a pain due to silly crown authority laws (e.g. can't change your lands to primogeniture due to sub-high crown laws, or can't attack others in HRE/Byzantine due to medium crown authority or higher, or lose counties/holdings due to medium crown authority or lower and heirs of your vassals having a liege other than you). Thus, I have very limited experience with avoiding an election to Emperor, especially in the HRE. I only try to avoid getting elected if I want to delay it a bit to smoothen the transition.

That's why I'm not a huge fan of playing inside the HRE. It always seems like people like me so much they want me on the throne. Then again, going grey eminence+kind+charitable+etc tends to do that.

Sadly, the problem is one caused by the player. When you strive to be the biggest vassal and insure you have the most awesome ruler, then the AI will see it and make you Emperor. My advise would be, if you're in the HRE, to try to make your ruler not so awesome. Avoid turning all your kings or dukes into grey eminences, and you'll be on track to avoid getting named Emperor. Alternatively, being a culture other than German tends to help out a lot... but even so, be careful. Your own ducal vassals can and will vote for you, as might the other minorities in the HRE. I still nearly became the Pomeranian Emperor of the HRE due to all my Pomeranian dukes voting for me, along with the Bohemian, Dutch, and Italian HRE members. Ended up having to murder a couple Italians just to keep a German on the throne....
