Despite the new naming interface really how names are chosen at random or by the ai and how the culture files are designed seems to be the same setup as CK2.
AI chooses child names based solely on family relations, if the culture has that set, or randomness. They have a certain percentage chance of picking the name of a father or grandfather for example. In CK3 now they have added the option for religious names for the player interface that works, for example, if you are a french muslim. The AI doesn't use this functionality it's solely based on what's in the culture file, like the previous game. If they do use it it's INCREDIBLY rare. I have never seen an AI pick a name from that list.
If you have a culture that wasn't historically Muslim the AI's names are limited solely to the culture name list or ancestors up to the grandparents generation. The religion names simply are a player choice, for AI or if the player wants a random name without clicking anything it only happens if by chance the French character's grandfather was named Muhammad.
To me it's just bizarre that you can have all this focus on religion but the aspect of naming is once again not fully developed. CK2 was out for like 10 years and it was hardly touched aside one update and left in an unfinished state. I would like to see more than that here.
Often people will have an islamic europe or a christian arabia and they don't use the names common to that religion and I think this is counter intuitive to this game's focus on RP. This is especially the case with islam because there ARE christian names in many of the islamic cultures yet none in the europeon ones. Another thing is obviously with pagans, as this feature is hardly used by them.
Also there really should be a "weight" for names like in EU4. Some of these name lists are MASSIVE, you never get a reasonably historical list of monarchs for countries because the choice is entirely random. Rarely attested names are just as equally prevalent as Louis. I'm sure this could be dynamic as well, for people who are in line of succession for a title they are more likely to take prior ruler names.
This could also be tied into religion. Like if you are french Louis has a weight of 4, if you are a french muslim Muhammad as a weight of 5. As in 5 times as likely to be picked.
There really should be for everything and not just for title holders. There are definitely names that are more like "commoner" names that high ranking nobles don't seem to have used. Priests or barons and people like that.
One thing that needs to be kept in mind though. There needs to be some functionality like where Muhammad for example is in the Turkish list as Memed. I think that MAY be already addressed but even if it this functionality was added it probably should only be used on cultures that don't have muslim, or norse, or whatever, names. It may be easier if like for french there should be some kind of a tag to specifically tell french to use names from religions ASIDE Christianity.
Or these religious names should not be picked what so ever AT ALL unless they are of that religion and there are name links linking the names to names in the religious files. If there is no link the name is still available at random like other names on the culture's specific list.
I just hope this is addressed eventually. This is one of the forgotten RP aspects in CK2. It was always annoying to have arab vassals as a christian (and the other way around) with bizarre names for the religion or none at all.
