How Much is a Pop?

I personally consider 1 pop to be ~1 billion people.

Comes with some abstractions, e.g. colony ships don't really carry 1 billion people, but rather ferry an intial amount of colonists back and forth to get the colony started. Outside of that it feels like a decent estimation (at least for me).

Which would be reasonable if all POPs were human. Or even just vaguely human sized and shaped. And had the exact same requirements as humans...

But they're probably not and they probably don't, so POPs are better off being abstractions of no predetermined number.

I am sure you can find an appropriate conversion factor - like human (bio)mass or the like - to fix that issue.

Basically anytime you try to assign a pop an actual number of people nothing is going to make any kind of sense. It's best left abstract and ambigious.
