How much cavalry should you put in your armies as commonwealth?

Pure cavalry performs well enough, at least early on, it's just expensive. And seeing as most europeans don't get any boni to cavalry, you're paying quite a lot for not much extra bang (but you may have a bonus due to polish winged lancers, I don't know...).

Iirc, standard is to fill the front rank (i.e. your Combat Width) with infantry, then add enough cavalry to use your flanking: 2 early on (1 for each side), then later 4 and 6. Add some more infantry to increase stamina.

Artillery in the second rank add half of their pips, _rounded down!_, to the frontline, so when you get artillery with several double-pips, add some of those. ... if you can afford them.

It's not very scientific, but while you usually have 4 cav in your combat stacks, as PLC or hordes I up it a bit but still well within allowed inf/cav ratio because of eco reasons. So a stack might have 14 inf and 8 cav. But maybe someone will tell me this isn't optimal at all.

Its personal preference. People like to play Poland purely for the full cav, max cav combat modifier because its unique with easy access to cossacks, Poland ideas and Western Cav pips. Poland can easily play a moderate Inf +4 cav like mentioned above or even play full infantry like is common since they even get inf combat ability in their national ideas and its cheaper and does the job. Obviously money saved will get put somewhere whether thats high cav levels, advisors, buildings or even mercs in tough wars so its an open choice
