Does anyone know? I mean just doing the story arc and their immediate same system missions got rough on me. So like just how much can you sidetrack and do other missions? I would like it if you could do much so I can take my time and do missions and earn money/salvege and build a strong lance. Well, I do not know and some of you might so thanks in advance...

There is only 1 penalty for not doing story line missions. The difficulty is in part based on how many story line missions you have done. The more you do the harder the missions every where become. So stopping the story for some time to build up is exactly what I did and there is no other impact. Enjoy the side missions.

Okay. Thanks for the replies. I thought the story/priority missions increased overall difficulty of the missions... Thanks again...

Yes because your MRB rating increases greatly when you do story missions.
Mainly because of the WTF factor like how that guy with 4 mechs pulled that off.

Higher MRB rating means missions with far greater risk.

So, if you get to a point where missions are becoming difficult, and you do some Bad Faith Withdrawals, will your MRB come down?

Interesting to hear overall missions don't get harder until you do story missions. I did the first two story missions almost as soon as I got them, and took a lot of damage and lost mech warriors. Now I' trying to get a assault mech or two before I try pantzy. Currently 2/2.5 skulls is the limit.

I simply relocate back to the area near Detroit and keep doing the 2 skull planets near it.
It is a lot more manageable since instead of facing pirates with full armored Assaults and tons of full armored heavies, I face full armor mediums mixed with heavies instead.

Now I am still bumming out on Capellan contracts at a 3 skull planet because killing heavies and salvaging them works well for my bottom line (sell excess chassis and those extra weapons for c-bills), without trying to beat up lances reinforced with assault mechs and backed with another heavy reinforcement lances with only 1 assault mech and 3 heavies.

Location is a huge factor in difficulty. Doing the story missions slowly moves you into harder and harder territory. But you can always go back (usually paying your own way) and grind on some weaker missions near the starting planets.

Hmmm... Now with that Iry says I am all confused after I thought that story progressed difficulty and I could just do sidetracking for money/salvages... Wonder who is right though???
You can go all the way back to the starting planets if you want. There is a Starmap full of places to go (some of them restricted) and they have different difficulty levels. The story naturally moves you into harder and harder territory, but you can pay the bill and intentionally fly back to easier places.

It is really the Star Map planet difficulty the enemy's mech tonnages depend on and within a planet's missions' difficulty rating gives you intel on how many of that tonnage mechs you will encounter... All in good cheers~!

That is really good to know as I am getting owned in the Panzar mission. I should be able to finish it but will need a while to get my Mechs back in the game and really need a heavy or 2. Am running a Centurian, Blackjack, Treub and Vindicator.

Just FYI, as far as I understand you won't see a single assault mech until you continue with the story past a certain point. I'm not at that point yet so I'm basing this on what I've read in this forum, but I've been playing for almost 58 hours (with a bit of idle time to be honest) and only seen up to 75-ton heavy mechs so far.

That being said, doing a bit of 'grinding' and improving your mech stable and pilot experience is generally a good idea to make difficulty more manageable. Just don't expect to get assault mechs without doing a bit of story first.

If I saw an assault mech at this point they would be cleaning the inside of my lances cockpits and not of blood. 3x 50 or 55 tonners and 1 45t would not enjoy aa Assault mech. But am happy to know you dont have to take the story missions as they appear as was getting tough.

From what I have seen, they do.
Skulls in the 4 starting systems were initially 0,5 skulls, after Panzyr they are up to 1,5 skulls. So there seems to be a connection between progress and story and MRB rating increase and the difficulty of contract offer you get.
