30-40% ???

There was a fair amount- I believe that someone related to Gerhault Bloodshield settled about 1,000-5,000 warriors?

And earlier, some settled near the monks until a English ruler attacked them and a viking relative of the leader of those killed came for revenge.

I think 0,5 to 2k can be a good figure. You must have in consideration that the total popultation in Scandinavia at that thime is estimated to somtething between 1 and 2M. And the people who went with Gånge Rolf to Normandy can not be much more than the men who went with Rurik to Russia.

Perhaps were there mercenaries from the Brittish Isles together with the Norse ? That may have boosted up the figure.

About 2k as Sten Sture d:ä said is realistic. You have to compare the Viking invasion as somthing like the Germanic invasion over the Roman Empire. I think only about 5 % of the people in the lands conquered by the Barbarians were Germanic. In the lands conquered by the Vikings is the same thing.

You can also compare the viking invasion of Normandy to the later Normand invasion of England. The Normands weren't very many compared to the Anglo-Saxon population. It's just that they took very vital positions in society which makes them seem like millions.

Just like the Mongol invasions. In China they took the top positions, and invited foreigners to take place in court over the Chinese.
Same in Europe.

Most ancient "barbar" invasions were that way that an "elite" of wandering warriors conquered a country with its peasants. Until the arrival of crossbows and musquets the rural population could not stop the raiding hordes.

As I knew Gånge Rolf was invited by the French king to defend Normandy and the Seine estuary from Norse raiders after the Norse siege of Paris.

And Rurik by the slaves in Kiev in order to defen them from raiding steppe nomads.

Chronology of Vikings in France

The following are the major dates in their plaguing of the Frankish Kingdom: 800 Channel coast invaded by Vikings.

820 Seine valley laid waste by Vikings.

836 Christians persecuted in the Contentin region.

858 Bayeux devastated by the Vikings.

875 Further persecution in the West.

885 Paris beseiged by Vikings

911 Treaty of St-Clair-sur-Epte: Rollo became the first Duke of Normandy.

912 Rollo baptised in Rouen.
Rollo is always depicted being a large man of red hair and beard. Normandy was in fact an independant dukedom. Under William Longsword the dukedom took on its final form with the unification of the Avranchin and the Contentin. 10-11C Consolidation of ducal powers. Restoration of the abbeys. Creation of new monasteries.

1027 Birth of William, the future conqueror of England, at Falaise.

1066 Invasion of England by William, King of France threatened by his vassal, the Duke of Normandy, now also King of England.

1087 Death of William the Conqueror in Rouen.
Normandy was not fully recovered by the French Crown until 1469, when the Ducal Seal, when Charles of France, the last Duke of Normandy, recognised by the French Crown, was dispossessed by the Dukedom.
