The last update I got was June 2016 that over 500,000 units have sold. I know this is kind of a niche game. But it is quickly becoming the greatest 4x game in my library. I was hoping someone from Paradox could give us a update on the numbers? I am trying to hype the game up with my friends, guild and family. Would love to be able to give them fresh numbers for perspective. Anyways this latest expansion is going to be so amazing, thank you paradox!

This image is telling me that it is possible that there are as many as 40,000 people who own the game but have never played it.

If you look at achievements and trophies for games, you will see a lot of times as many as 20-50% of all players never got the achievement for finishing the tutorial/doing whatever else you do in the first 5-20mins of starting the game.

There's A LOT of people who buy games and never play them or very very briefly touch them.

To be fair that's what I did with Hearts of Iron 4.

I have a total of 10 minutes in the game.
I bought the game then started 80 hour workweeks and havent had time.
Similiar to me and CK2. I played it for 10-20 hours but then I got furious every time my ruler died and I had to restore the kingdom. That was despite me studying history at university and knowing what I had to expect. In the end I vowed to come back and master the game.
With Stellaris I am well in the three digit ingame hours and always played on ironman with mods that don't block achievements.

I am a veteran in grand strategies/4x and I pretty much always disable ironman. The small lagspikes caused by the monthly autosave are unnecessary if you just keep yourself from savescumming.

I got over 1000h in EU4 and only 7 achievements and I'm pretty sure those 7 was from a single short attempt. Some people simply just don't like ironman or care about achievements.

MOST people don't care about achievements. I read a study somewhere that showed only like 20% (and declining) of users cared for them.

I think we will need to see a few more expansions and DLCs before stellaris really starts living up to it's potential, there is a very large space 4x market out there, that when the game is in a similarily developed, optimized and fleshed out game state as EU 4 it will sell alot more units.

Not just newbie players, but also those that
a) can't play without mods, and don't care enough to activate Ironman mode if they do play without mods for once
b) fear savegame corruption and know that Ironman mode prevents them from loading up an older save if it happens
c) simply don't care about achievements at all

A lot of veteran players don't get achievements. I have triple digits in Stellaris and have 0; I have almost 700 hours in CK2 and have a handful.

Are you talking about your kingdom splitting up due to gavelkind succession? That is why I generally like to play a country that starts with primogeniture or open succession. Not to get off topic 'cause this is the Stellaris forum, just wanted to ask.

I tried the irish because it was advised for noobs by a guide.

At topic: Steam spy only has the numbers of public steam profiles, right?

Yeah, gavelkind sucks. You can get out of it fairly quickly but it is annoying. It does, however, only split up the realm into independent states if you have multiple titles of the same tier, so if you're a duke with three duchies or a king with two kingdoms or whatever. If you're the king of one kingdom, it may hand off some of your counties and duchies to your other sons, but they will be vassals of your heir.

Try playing the Byzantines. They don't have to deal with that crap.

On topic: I have no idea. There've been a number of threads debating those numbers that largely descended into "people don't play because this game sucks" trolls vs. their fanatic fanboy counterparts.
