That's a good point, well made. Out of interest, why not?

I have a CK2 icon on my desktop and it's just easier to click that and start playing instead of firing up Steam first and then going in and starting CK2. Sure it's like 45 seconds or less but over time those seconds add up to more time playing.

But how many Steam games can you actually do that to? In my experience its none at all. I brought from Gamersgate, but I use Raptr for logging my hours (which are around ~150). I doubt if Paradox are going to release their sales figures, but I reckon they are pretty good for such a niche game.

you could guess it by comparing the "recommends this game to a friend" in steam with other games "recommends this game to a friend" comment of which you know how often it got sold, i would guess CK2 at around 100k sold copies.

Is it possible to recomend a game to your Steam friends if you don't actually have that game through Steam?

I used to hate steam too but recently it's overlay has become pretty useful. It saves me the trouble of alt-tabbing out of my game to answer messages on skype etc if my friends can just send me a message through steam, especially considering how CK2 often sucks up the whole day lol...

Agreed.

I'd like to see the sales figures, but I'd be equally interested in seeing how the number of players holds up over time. As we all know from EUIII and other Paradox titles, the games have huge longevity and a consistent fan base. I, for one, continue to play Paradox's titles for years after their release, which is certainly not something I can say of other developers' titles.

If that 2.5k player base remains at that level in a year's time, I'll be all the more impressed.

Seems to be holding up well sofar

There are quiet a few, I'm not at home now so I can't actually test it but I know ALL of paradox games can be launched without actually starting steam.

Oh and as for those talking about hours I have 100 hrs on CK2, but I have 500+ hours on mount and blade warband. :| <-- incidently another game that can be launched without starting steam.

I believe it is the best selling dynastic simulator set in the middle ages designed in Sweden :) .

...Apologies, I couldn't resist :p .

They need to put that on the website and the ads. "The Best selling dynastic simulator set in the middle ages developed in Sweden of ALL TIME"
