This isn't a technical question, where a specific answer is required. This one is an opinion thing, more along the lines of informal chit-chat. The warmongers amongst us really need not respond.....because we all know where you stand :). But I'm sure you warmongers got to brag:) Tell your war stories.....how you spread your nation's color from one province to the next. Hey...I just covered everything a warmonger does. So thats it. :D

Anyway.....

When one of your allies goes to war, and you join in(if you join in), how long do you stick it out?

1) I'll take the money and run!

2) If it starts going bad I'll back out and ask for peace!

3) I'll fight to the death!

My own look on this is the long range view. I take into consideration that I'm here till 1792, and I do want to be #1 in points at the end. So when I do get into a war I want to profit! Hey......its stupid to lose troops($$$$$)and maybe a territory(more$$$$$$). So in most cases, yes I choose #1....I'll take the money(maybe a province depending on my bb)and run!

Now I have been loyal....for instance I wiped out the rebels and retook a province of an ally who wasn't able to reach the province:).

generally #2, but i do make some judgement on the cost/benefit ratio.

usually, i do quite well in ally-declared wars, and so if i have taken some hard-to-get provinces or taken some stiff losses, i am then in a hurry to make a seperate peace.

i have been caught fighting wars for too long, and so i have learned the hard way.

i usually welcome these wars as i get to fight without sacrificing stability.

I like it when my allies declare war - saves my diplomats and stability.

I guess I am a very loyal type - I like role playing, and though Machiavelli had a fair number of disciples, kings also found themselves very honour bound.

I even occasionally claim a province for a computer ally, if the ally did a lot of work. I remeber I did for France, when I was playing Poland.

When the going gets tough, I dont mind claiming a province or two in a separate peace treaty. That way, I gain the provinces my ally is likely to loose, evening out the overall effects of my AI ally's stupidity.

that can be an excellent thing to do, as it gives you a huge boost in relations and saves $ in state gifts. something to be considered if you like to diploannex

i do that sometimes, especially if the ally is having a hard time of it.

some allies though, i never help, as they are their just to round out the alliance and provide a bit of canon fodder or to deny them from joining somebody else's crew. (* the fools*)

I did this (demand a province for an ally) where Sweden got Estonia from Poland. It was purely Machiavellian, though, as I arranged for them to quit the alliance a few years later. Now, as long as they keep Estonia, I have a CB against them:cool: .

But yeah, it can be real annoying to answer an ally's call, slug it out, and then get nothing for it. Of course, when they answer *my* call, well, usually they're lucky to be breaking even when I make peace, so I'm doing them enough of a favor just letting them out of it:rolleyes: .

I almost always honor the request, unless one of the opponents has esay access to kick my butt, then I'll decline. But, most of the time, I end up never fighting anyone, hoping that after 12 or 16 months, a white peace is acceptabel to the opposing alliance leader.

Depends....if I'm hurting in the stability department, and it looks like the war might drag on, I'll bow out unless the alliance is extremely important to me (ie - I've been really bad lately, and need to keep what friends I've got).

I tend to pick my fights pretty carefully. I *despise* being dragged through a long back-and-forth war, no matter what my position. If I'm going to fight, then the war will be ended quickly. I'll sweep in, apply maximum pressure to a few key points (ie - territories I want), and then bow out gracefully, having done my fair service to the alliance by weakening our common enemies.

It depends.

Generally I follow my own interests. So I try to take province, get money, even pay indemnities after few battle to a big major who is to strong for me (e.g. against Turkey when I play minor ) and, make peace. But if I am the big guy in the alliance and my minor allies have tough time, I try to help to keep them from annexion. Good allies are rare. So I try my best to keep them. So, I rarely refuse to join a war when a good allie is part of. It happens sometimes I sacrifice one possible conquest to give one to my ally. Permit a good ally to expan is a sound strategy. :)

Personnally, I really don't care of the points. I create my own objectives. It is enough.

Normally when I do this, its to take territory from the enemy....cut them down to size while not increasing my badboy.

I didn't know about the improvement in relations benefit thanks saskganesh.

Stability never seemed to be a problem for me. But playing a Brandenburg it seems longer to get back up to +3. Normally it takes six months or less per point. To get one point as Brandenburg took over a year. So I have been carefull about DoWing this game. Spending a long time on buying stability is a waste and something I try to avoid. War gains and not losses are my concerns when I have the option of war.

#3#3#3!!! I usually try to annex the nation in question, hopefully with my ally's help and without them pulling out of the war before I'm finished (ex: I'm Brittany, conquering Poland w/ help from my ally, Russia. They have half of Poland, I have half. I'm very close to capturing the last province, when Russia backs out for 132d:mad:    !!!! I then have to conquer the rest of Poland myself!).

I prefer the 2 province + money thing and making a separate peace. Then we both go well out of it. Also I notice that AI nations are extremely stupid and unloyal...

Backing out of nations for money when you have all provinces. They also sign separate peaces alot. It seems that the human players aren't the most ahistorical after all...   :)

Usually I honor my words, at least with trusted and reliable allies, or when i NEED to keep this ally. But if doing so would cost me too much, such as being invaded by powerful nations, I'll decline, or do nothing and sign a separate truce ASAP.

Sometimes some of your allies keep declaring wars to powerful nations or alliances, with seemingly no over reasons than to put you in deep troubles

So I never follow an ally against deadly ennemies, I'm loyal but not suicidal!
