I have 11 loans out in my Siam game due to a poorly timed Khmer rebellion. I'm thinking of restarting ... that's a LOT of gold to pay back before I can do anything interesting, even if I am now the largest country in my backyard.

Also, I was bummed to find out that giving provinces to vassals has a Karma cost equivalent to taking them for oneself :(

As usual, Brandenburg. Took me 2 restarts to find a working tactic (good old cheesy PU over Bohemia):

JRj2Lkb.png

I'm behind in Admin tech, those coring costs are just ridiculous, but to be fair so is the rest of Europe except OPMs which didn't expand and England with their 5/6/5 god king. In my El Dorade Brandenburg game, I founded my first colony in 1580 and had Hamburg conquered in 1568. Also Hungary, Poland, TO, Lithuania, Sweden and GB have rivalled me, and my alliance with Austria is becoming very shaky since I flipped to Protestans. And Austria is allied with Brittany, Hungary and Serbia. I also can field barely half my forcelimits because i'm poor because I don't have the rich harbours because I lack admin to core my way through Germany.

I gladly take the old AE back if the coring costs are reverted.

Slow...but am not really sure if it's because of CS/patch or not. The challenges I'm having don't really have much to do with the new features. Am still pretty new; did well with Castile/Spain in 1.11, but then that's a newbie nation. Decided to go Brandenburg for my first 1.12 campaign, which is also my first true HRE game.

Have done a couple of restarts...the basic problem is the Catch-22 of alliances; need them in order to be somewhat protected against aggression and have an edge on whoever I decide to attack...but those same allies aren't always willing to come along on offensive wars, and often drag me into unwanted wars of their own. I don't think that's a Brandenburg-specific problem, more just me feeling my way through trying to navigate a nation which doesn't start already large. Then there's the whole HRE thing; I managed to become Emperor as Spain in earlier game (kinda fell in my lap), so have some familiarity with the mechanics, but now I'm trying to figure out how to get anything done militarily within the HRE (specifically, make some gains against Pomerania) without Austria jumping on me.

I know that Brandenburg's NI will eventually lead to a great army, but that's going to take a while; those advantages aren't here yet. So I'm trying in good faith to pursue the development thing, and grow my 7 provinces while trying to get involved in as few wars as possible. I'm thinking I'll try to get them all to at least 10 development (for 2 bldgs), get at least one full Mil Idea finished, get to the first Prussian military-related NI, and hopefully diplo-vassalize one or two OPMs (yes, I'm looking at you, Anhalt) before I really start trying to militarily expand. At my level of experience, I don't know if this is "smart" or "unnecessarily timid".

I do know I tried to go pretty aggressively in earlier start, vs Pomerania, TO, and Saxony. Had Austria, Bohemia, and Poland as allies. Initially went very well...but then got dragged into endless wars by those allies, and just got caught in an endless manpower-drain downward spiral.

I do really like the new feature of being able to take provinces and humiliate rival in a peace settlement...+50 power projection much easier to attain now.

Very first game was as England. I somehow was lucky enough to ally Castile, Burgundy, Austria, and Portugal all on day one, and I used my massive alliance network to smash France into smithereens and recreate the Angevin Empire. As I was doing this I vassalized Ireland and Scotland and developed England quite a bit, erecting buildings everywhere and quickly becoming the richest nation in the world by an enormous margin. Then I converted to Protestantism and used my historical mission to PU France. At that point I started colonizing and set up CNs in Brazil, the Caribbean, Mexico, and North America, but had to quit around 1520 because it was just getting boring.

Second game was as Byzantium. Got smashed by the Ottomans and ragedquit.

Third and current game is as Brandenburg. I started by taking advantage of the nerf to AE and exploded throughout northern Germany, eating all of Pommerania, as well as the western part of Prussia, most of Saxony, and the eastern part of Westphalia. During the course of this I got super lucky and somehow managed to make myself HRE. In my England game I saw Austria lose the imperial throne too, so I think the devs should probably look at the HRE to make sure it's sufficiently stable. Anyway, I ended up inheriting Burgundy in 1465 or so, and after taking Silesia and eastern Saxony from Bohemia I'm the richest and most powerful country in the world in only 1475. It's kind of funny, but I'm actually disappointed I did so well, as I was hoping for a conventional Germany game. In any case, the next few decades will have to be spent constructing buildings and catching up on tech, as I'm only at admin tech 5 thanks to massive coring expenses.

Badly. I started as Milan and was merrily eating my way through northern Italy until the event fired for the Italian states to leave the HRE, at which point France decided to go balls deep into the peninsula.

Loving the 14.5 year regency I got in 1496 as Holland...

EDIT: UPDATE: 19 year old 6/2/4 low legitimacy ruler has crappier, 1 year old strong claim son shortly after the regency ends. Promptly dies, beginning a second, 13.5 year regency in 1512.

Don't really feel bad about ctrl-alt-delete scumming away that.

Who would have thought that you might have to change the way you play if a major change is made to the game.

Playing as Burgundy. Doing ok. Let France get a bit too large, but I managed to win 2 wars against them and take Paris. I converted to reform and will probably form the Netherlands.(But first I have to feet all the French land to a vassal.)

My first game was England, without the DLC. I went to war with France at 1450 and ended it with a victory two years later. I just kept him busy in the north and used small armies to siege him in the south for an easy first victory. After that, he lost a war with burgundy and then exploded into a bunch of other nations. Then I realized all the dlc was 75% so I bought it all, along with common sense and I figured I'd better start a new game due to potential compatibility issues.

Now I have no idea what nation to play. I'm tempted to re-start the england game but I'm also tempted to play Hungary and immediately release and play as Croatia, as Paradox changed their colour to a really soft purple colour and it looks amazing.

Playing Brittany and have almost eradicated France. France did hold off Burgandy and Austria to a white peace in my first attack against it, but subsequent wars were a bit more successful. Castile did not hold up to a Aragonese/Portuguese alliance, and Muscovy lost out after a good early war against Novgorod.

Its going very well. Playing Teutonic Order going for achievements like Baltic Crusader, Fine Goosestep and the protestant one, also picked up full house sofar :) It was pretty rough in the beginning vs Poland and Lithuania, but with help from Austria and the new and improved Hungary(who is really strong in my game now) I managed.

Had Poland release Mazovia, took some provinces from Pomerania, vassalized LO and sold them Riga. Then vassalized Novgorod and started feeding them their cores, took some more out of Poland and made them release Moldavia and they also lost the PU from prestige loss afterwards.

And now its soon 1600 and I own a couple extra provinces from Poland and the entire Russian region. It was surprisingly big, need to take quite some eastern part of Lithuania, entire Crimean area, half of Golden horde and a couple provinces from Kazan. But Baltic Crusader is mine and now to convert it all again to Protestant xD.

Tuscany -> Italy Game. Year 1565. Going well... for now. My current ruler is leaving me hungry for more monarch points... Allied with Austria. Fearing the French... Ironman Game.

I'm playing a game with Cleves. The first few years were quite challenging, as Cologne, Münster and Ostfriesland all declared war on me - but by having strong allies (Burgundy e.a.) I managed to not only defend myself, but gained quite a bit of territory.
By now it's roughly 1480 and I control an area from Holland in the west, along the coast to Oldenburg and south to Cologne. Quite happy with that.
The only thing that I don't quite like is that it seems that directly annexing territory is far more easier than diplo-vassalizing - or at least I have never found it so easy to bite quite a big chunk out of the HRE without big coalitions forming against me.

My only complaint with the game is that the message for arrived at destination applies for naval units now patrolling trade. Also the AI seems kinda wonky when it comes to the new combat system, but other than that, I love the expansion. I always hated the maneuver part of war. Good job PDX. I also love the fact that it now show who can join in a coalition against you in peace deals, don't remember that in a DD.

Seems they finally fixed peace deals then? Did they also fix the AE gains and the diplo cost? I asked for "who coalition" in peace deal window since forever. And resent the demand when I AAR wrote that i calculate coalition triggering on PAPER. Hope they diminish the demand for paper math further in Eu4.
