The realm rejoices as Paradox Interactive announces the launch of Crusader Kings III, the latest entry in the publisher’s grand strategy role-playing game franchise. I've seriously never noticed AI this bad in a Paradox game, even in HoI4 where they don't know how frontlines work. The AI literally does nothing but stand around 90% of the time, and it's because they seem to want to group up all their troops... except 'all their troops' means literally all of them. These armies waited for over 5 years for 15 French troops, where they finally decided to move and siege ONE (1) province. It is almost impossible to play a vassal because the AI loves targeting the player, and it kills realism and just believability when troops don't move for half a decade.

Meanwhile, the AI...

I know Paradox testers aren't the most important people to their company, but this stuff is just egregious.

Yeah, AI behavior in 1.1 seems... odd.

It does a better job at taking territory, and the AI responds really well when attacked but that said, the biggest issue is that it's stopped reinforcing the player. Despite it's other issues in 1.03 it was damn good at aiding me in fights, but in 1.1 they'll just shuffle about, 2 or 3 counties away from you as you fight.

I had at least a dozen battles where I fought with the enemy for months but allies just milled about a few counties away. Fights I started out winning until enough enemies joined from 6+ counties away that they eventually outnumbered me despite them having twice the losses. In 1.03 they'd have joined up.

I was participating in a crusade after the new patch launched and I noticed my allies just suiciding into the Abbasid doomstack over and over, it was really strange as before the patch AI at least tried to run away if a massively superior army was coming at them. It basically made the crusade unwinnable as the Abbasids had this 15000 doomstack all grouped up and my allies kept landing ships and running their tiny armies into the stack.

Yeah, they are happy to suicide, but won't join your 80k stack trying to fight a 100k stack, or worse your 80k stack that's fighting only 40k of their 100k stack and would lose in a heartbeat if they joined.

It's maddening. That Crusade took nearly 20 years to fight because I could only combine stacks with my allies one out of a dozen fights. 160k is less than 100k when you can only use 80k at a time.

In my game the ai parked its fleet next to the war goal and sat there at sea for months in end in the same spot till it had only 5 troops left (started with nearly 4k). For a save and screen shot but not bug reported it yet. Wondered if it was mod issues (only running ui mods though).

It's a shame you can't just click a button and ask their armies to come to where yours is. If paradox ever added that into one of their games it would be an epic solution.

(yes, that was sarcasm)

I think the reason the AI tries to split its armies is to reduce supply issues, but obviously it doesn't work as intended because it's a paradox game. They should simplify the AI instead of trying to have it do all these tricks. Just have it gather up all its troops and besiege the enemy capital or chase around the biggest player army, depending on if it can catch up (pretty sure the AI can do these sorts of calculations). That's mostly how warfare worked in this period anyway.
