I'm France. I have a military alliance with Portugal and military access. Our relations are +177.

Yet Portugal attacked my colony in South Africa, drove me out and annihilated my troops.

I cannot fight back and am unable to declare war because of the military access (according to the greyed out diplomatic screen for DOW).

I don't understand this one at all.

Playing 1.09 vanilla.

Can I fight back or take any of their colonies? I'm assuming the answer is yes with a major BB hit, canceling military access, screwing up relations, etc.
You just answered your own question :D . That's a nice advantage of being Spain/Portugal.

Going reformed as France would be a lot better then protestant... there is no protestant province in France last time i saw, but there are plenty of reformed ones (plus France starts near Holland-Helvetia-The Palatinate, which are mostly reformed).

A tip to avoid the ToT effects? raise forts in your colonies. The Portuguese/Spanish AI rarely lays siege to them. That, or vassalizing Portugal, and DAing them 10 years later. Should be a walk in the park when playing with France. When you get rid of either Portugal or Spain, the ToT disapears.

Game ended with me finding out how easy France is. Gave up on colonization, focused on keeping Spain and Austria in check re: victory points and the economy just took care of everything else. Easy win for the first time, as you all advised.

Now I'm tackling England. A lot different challenges. I love this game.

You need to turn protestant before you can turn reformed, so yes, you would have to do that.
