Hi,

Could someone please explain to me how economic power is calculated? I think it uses multiple resources (might just be energy though). Also could someone give me tips on how to get it to increase quickly? I made the stupid mistake of building up the federal fleets instead of my own and of course another empire overtook me economically. (Interesting that the system uses economic power now though).

It seems to only take trade value into account (so yes with a certain policy it is in some sense energy income). Ie. most likely the sum of the trade income of the last 12 months or last year (at least in v.2.2.4). I am not sure if only the collected trade income is taken into account or also the trade income lost through piracy.

thats wrong, gestalts have "economic power" too

And, just to confirm, is federal presidency calculated purely upon economic power or are any other factors included?
It's calculated based on Relative Power, which is composed of economic superiority, fleet power superiority and technological superiority. Compared to technologies, fleet power counts twice as much and economy thrice as much. So yeah, economy is the most important one but don't overlook fleet power.
