How interesting is the Shroud and is there a new endgame crisis related to it?

I've played my first game with Utopia and I like most of the new features. I went for the psionic ascension since it seemed by far the most interesting, however by the time I got to "Transcendence" I already controlled over 50% of the Galaxy so I got bored and stopped playing without exploring the Shroud thoroughly. There is a really long cooldown every time you interact with it and I didn't want to play another 100 years just to check it out.

So has anyone managed to explore the Shroud and can you tell me if it is worth it and also if there is an endgame crisis attached to it?
