How hostile are the Rev. states?

So since I haven't gotten to the late game yet in my playthroughs and I haven't encountered Revolutionary states yet I'm wondering that how hostile are they? If I border one should I immedietely try to band everybody around me, friends, pawns and enemies, to try to take it down or can I reason with it and you know, turn on rest of Europe?

In my Japan game, I glanced over Europe towards the end of the game, and Revolutionary France had gone from historical France + Naples for some reason, to France, Italy, and half of what was once the HRE. This must've happened incredibly quickly, so I'd say be on your guard.

Probably that reason was the DHE that gives France claims on the kingdom of Naples.
