To be fair the AI in the vast majority of strategy games is poor. Given the complexity of HOI the best we can reasonably expect is that it doesn't do anything too stupid or is too easily exploited. If you're looking for a challenge from the AI, you shouldn't hold your breath.

But in the other HoI, we had challenge against AI. Even if it was not really smart (but not stupid either). So, I think we can expect challenge in single player. And we're talking about a Paradox game, not a Civilization.

I wonder how good the AI will be. I was watching one of the WWWs, the one with Germany v. England where Johan was England and a couple people played Germany. It was disheartening to see Germany occupy Moscow and several other Soviet cities in just a few months (and during winter). I know the dude who played Germany then, I think his name is Daniel, is supposed to be super good at this AND I know it was an earlier version of the game--but still that has me a bit worried.
Watching the WWW videos the AI seems really bad.

Daniel is said to be a great player and I dont doubt it. but I never seen him make an "impressive" attack, an unexpected maneuver or anything that the average player wouldn't do. It just seems that the AI is so bad the he just picks up what they leave behind, and then pushes when the AI doesn't understand what to do (watch the Japan video, really sad).

Right now the AI seems just a notch above what Creative Assembly would push out :(
I'm crossing my fingers that I'm dead wrong

My AI expectations will be judged in a Germany game and are very simple: As long as I don't already conquered everything except the US 1,5 years after declaring war, its an improvement.

The German-British multiplayer was started nearly half a year ago with multiple bugs that screwed the AI, I wouldn't make any conclusions based on that.

I found the Japan WWW was actually rather nice, because it looked like invading China is finally a challenge and not finished within 3 months, although I guess thats more due to the supply changes than to AI changes.

Hungary WWW worried me a bit as well. For me it looks like Daniel just always tells his out of equipment and out of organization units to simply push push push and somehow he is winning by doing that. Then its maybe a matter of AI doing inferior troop compositions, or simply wrong balancing, not the tactical battle AI.

Getting the AI to be good is probably the most difficult challange in designing a game. Expecting it to be as good as a human is very unrealistic

no one with any knowledge would expect it to be as good as a human. but expecting it to be a decent challenge isn't asking to much

Actually it could be so good, but it must be neural network and it'll take A LOT of time to teach it. Also, it effectively remove any possibility to make any balance changes, cuz every small value change could lead to teach it from scratch.

That is my main concern too. The great Hungary, and then watching Finland occupying Leningrad and Moscow by 1939 WWWs made me nervous. As if possible pre-emptive moves by smaller countries are completely neglected in the game.

I am sure they noticed that and have been fixing it. Hope it will be OK by release day.

Nobody in RL would have sit and watch Hungary occupy Austria. They sit on their asses when Germany did, because Germany was strong and was a threat, but Hungary occupying Austria and then even being offered help by Germany to annex Czechoslovakia should not happen.

if you closely watched the finland WWW they said that they forgot to turn on the AI thats why they succeeded

Thankfully there is a difficulty setting so if it is to easy you can just make the AI punch harder:)

They told in a WWW (I don't remember which one, I think it was with Hungary) the difficulty setting changes only the malus on the player, not the AI.
