I mostly play at 1/4 months without pauses. If nothing is happening and there is no chance if anything happening for a while I'll move it up to 1/1 year. I only move it to 1/2 months when I'm involved in some massive BB war.

I've found that as I get more experience in the game, I am able to play at faster speeds. I used to play at 1 min = 1 month during wars and 1 min = 8 months during peace, but now I'm at the point where I go 1 min = 4 months during wars (and sometimes faster, if it looks like I'll have an easy victory) and 1 min = 2 years during peace (unless I have a lot of conquistadors active, in which case I'll go to 1 min = 1 year) and sometimes find myself wishing that there was a faster setting.

I do have my message setting such that the game pauses when anything important happens. I also auto-save every year, but that's just to protect myself from the dreaded CTD.

i have been running at 1year=1 min for a long time and i likes it that way
though i did try playing at 2yrs a min and that got me really confused and crashed more often cuz i get click happy hehe.
i get really good at crashing things sometimes muhahahahaha
bring me any computer or computer game i can crash it no matter what

1 min = 8 months, occasionally speeding it up to 1 min = 1 year, slowing down to 1 min = 4 months or even 2 months when in a complicated or prolonged war. (Like my last one, my vassal Courland decided to go on a warmongering spree, and I, as Brandenburg, ended up in wars with Poland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Venice and somebody I can't remember now, all at the same time. Talk about troop movement... And get this, Austria invaded my colony in Bombay!)

Of course, a finger poised over Pause button is a must, because I pause for almost anything...

Started at 1-8 months then moved up to for a year though now I play at max speed as I pause a lot and all.
Takes a years worth to change speed anyway.

Ctrl+/ctrl-.

My speed depends on my activity. But very seldom above 1 min = 8 months.

wow that was a very pleasant journey through ways to handle the game -- i've been going much slower, I will try speeding up and go with the game flow

the pause button - I would LOVE to be able to change the default key assignment since it's so important in the speed question (and you know it's nice not to have to stretch too much) ... I went into the key config txt file a while back and found the Pause key entry, but when I changed it to a different key, the game continued to use default setting. I've reprogrammed the other keys OK, is the pause key hardcoded? anyone found a way to do this?

thanks again for sharing speedtastic tactics I'm going to be pacing up during peace at least ! (probably a poor peace/pace joke to be had there but i'll leave it at the door as this thread's been such fun)

I actually do 1 min - 2 yrs in the first century and then slow down with each new century. Because I hate the music in the 1400's and then it gets better.

I actually quite enjoy the feel of the game and normally I read history of the countries I am playing (actually reading while playing ) so I don't like to rush through.

I also noticed that being the slow thinker that I am, I achieve much more at 1 min - 8 months. even though I know there is such thing as a pause button.
