I also suspect it is a multi core issue, maybe harsher on some hardware than other. I have noticed a lot of Intel Dual and some Quad core users having massive problems, same for - and a test run on another AMD dual core machine showed how pathetic my speed really is - ~3 min vs ~9 for me...
