So the last time I played EU was when I was running an AAR about Italy (maybe somebody remembers the Italian puzzle :D
with MM 1.3, since then due to many reasons I did not have much time to tinker with computer games. Free time is still scarce, but reading about Karl V really gave me a EU itch that requires a good scratch.

I went through the forums and saw that MM gold 2 has come out, congratulations on that ubik! Yet I can honestly say that I have got no idea what they were talking about in the topic regarding this addition, so many new features in that game.

So while I sit here pondering whether or not to purchase EU Napoleons ambition in order to play MM 2, I would like you guys to help me get up to date, remember, the last thing I played was EU with MM patch 1.3.

How does
- colonization work?
- how does trade work?
- how is the AI, it's economy (what freebies does it get?) and diplomacy (how possible is it to agree to a normal piece with a small/medium/large country)
- What are the major things that MM added since MM 1.3 up until the latest version.
- Anything else important that I probably missed.

Hope you guys can help, cheers!

Hello!

If you enjoyed MM for 1.3 you should definitely buy NA to enjoy MMG2. You can download the manual from my sig and check for yourself how far we raised the bar. I am pretty sure you'll be open mouthed (and sorry about the lack of modesty ;) ).

It is a whole new game and talking about diferences does not make any sense. Even MMG was a whole new game when compared with MMIV for that matter...

NA adds significant elements to the EU3 experience and should be regarded as a definite purchase.

But much more important, In Nomine, the new expansion is due to release this week and needs NA to be played.

Having the pelasure of beta testing it, I can tell you In Nomine *is* something really special. A masterpiece, really.

So, my counsel is: whether you want to play MMG2 or not you should upgrade to NA because that is the only way to get IN.

As a final note the Magna Mundi team will be releasing a version, called Magna Mundi Platinum for In Nomine not far into the future.

Colonization:
In vanilla NA 2.2: You can still pick QFTNW as your first idea, but you will need one of the atlantic islands, such as the azores or iceland to begin colonizing early as a western european power.
In MMG2: You need 4 of the exploration ideas, which ideas are exploration ideas are in the MMG2 manual, and then you can pick Mass Exploration and Colonization (ME&C) which replaces QFTNW. Until then, you explore by event discoveries, and expensive event explorers and conquistadors.

Trade:
In vanilla NA 2.2: As always there are winners and losers in the trade game, and you're either one or the other. Autosend merchants, and requiring markets to be opened to your country before you can trade in them have been added.
In MMG2: You will always be able to maintain some merchants somewhere, but you also won't be able to dominate world trade. Smaller countries are able to do better at trade than larger ones.

AI freebies:
NA 2.2: no naval attrition as always, but the economic crutches have been removed.
MMG2: 25% more taxes, 40% less land attrition, 10% higher technology cost.

Diplomacy:
NA 2.2: It is now possible to get up to 100% warscore deals after occupying a fairly small portion of their country, but you must cause damage to their armies. It helps to blockade them. You can now see your relative strengths in the war overview screen, which also allows you to see your respective war capacities, which is what the AI uses to decide if it will accept peace, and what peaces it will accept.
MMG2: More white peaces than vanilla NA, and shorter, more costly wars.

Anything else added in MMG 1&2: Forts are now larger, and all provinces have at least a level 1 fort. Japan and the HRE have been completely overhauled; the Ottomans expand sensibly; religions is handled very differently, missionaries cost about 50 ducats, but conversion takes place gradually, same religious group taking 2 and different religious group taking 2 to get to the same religious group, religious tolerance is handled differently as well; modernization was changed greatly, being gradual, similar to Imago Dei, but with different requirements; Berber nations now do far better, thanks to the Barbary pirates events, which help to add interest to the mediterranean; personal unions and vassalization are both more difficult to maintain; the middle east has been balanced and revised; colonial revolts have been reworked entirely; and too much has been changed to go into in my post, read their great, 170 page manual, which can be downloaded from ubik's signature.
Welcome to NA and MMG2. :)

Edit: curse you ubik! :p

Sounds fun! I'd like to try it out, but is there an easy way to disable all deterministic events?

They don't really have deterministic events as such. They have flavor events that don't have much of an impact, and they have a much smaller number of events that continue what was already going on when the game began, and are highly variable, and may not happen. Exploration has a large event pool, but it doesn't follow a defined path, and that's about it. Though if you do find these events deterministic, then flavor events, event files mentioning historical people in the file title, and the spanish formation file (not the spanish nation file) are the ones you should delete.

If I do delete them, is it likely to make other events not work properly?

(2 Ubik: by deterministic, I mean almost any historic or pseudo-historic event. I just don't like them. But I do like a lot of other things in MMG)

Thank you for replies guys. The second expansion certainly comes as surprise, is there a place where all the sneak peaks (I know paradox does them :p ) are linked together?

I think I will go and play MM 1.3 without any expansions and wait for the second expansion to come out, hopefully along with a 2 for 1 deal for it, along with NA :D

I will also take the time to read through the MM manual, at the very least it is very interesting to see what creative people can accomplish.

Ubik, have you thought of offering paradox to distribute the final version of MM (if such a thing will exists) along with the game?

I play the latest verison of MM2 and Ottomans sucked in 4 of my 5 games. Twice they were overwhelmed and conquered by Austira, once by Hungary and once they released every possible vassal including Bulgaria and became a relativly small and weak country with many unannexable allies.

Is the "Plague" labelled a flavor event with "no great impact"?
I never had this event in Vanilla, IIRC, and it has a huge impact! Talk about being attacked right in the middle of a plague induced rebellion and you know what I am talking about.

I don't think that will be an option anytime soon. ;)

If I tell you the coolness factor of MM 1.3 is about 10% of the coolness factor of MMG2, does it convince you to buy NA now?

If I tell you the coolness factor of NA is about 10% of the coolness factor of IN, does it convince you to buy IN tomorrow?

Believe me, with the available options in the EU3 product line you are losing too much. :)

Nope.

Personally, I'm just losing the chance to see error messages about my sucky computer. Maybe when I get around to buying a new one there will be a 3-in-1 pack for EU3. In which case I'll even leave a Windows partition in the HDD, instead of doing a complete wipe. :D

I never cared much for NA because it didn't really add anything but better colonization options. IN is much more like my taste(i'll have to wait till friday though, no money before), with civil wars, and the fact that your colonies might revolt. Heh, i can imagine it; The Spanish Civil War! :D

Gamemechanic-wise NA didn't add that much in itself except maybe change capital and new ideas and the Nappy wars.

Gameplaywise it did improve speed and stability a great deal so much that MM was actually playable without crashing because NA actually dealt with massive amounts of events without eating up all your machines memory.

Anyways... NA is worth the money alone with the stability and speed improvements.

All of those things would convince me a year ago, when I spent my overly abundant free time writing a AAR, among other things. These days the situation is the opposite, I have an urge to play, but that would require me to get into a fight with my planner, so waiting for a 2 in 1 package of expansions isn't as hard as one can think :D

Yet I am still looking through the materials on both MM and NA/IN, as well as trying to add a 25th hour to the day, to try and play a bit.
