How does the airports DLC interact with maps that have no plane pathways?

It won't work at all.
The map editor should allow you to add them as well.
There are mods if you own the steam version to add airplane paths.
Otherwise, planes can't interact with the outside connection.

Yeah, I did a trial run when it first came out but literally just built an airport. Hoped it was due to lack of citizens.
